Jellyfish - 1991 - Germany - Bubbles & Pixie Stix
1991 (unknown date)
Munich, Germany
'Bubbles & Pixie Stix'
Broadcast recording, good quality
mp3 @ 320 kbps
By request, here's one more show from Jellyfish. This is from the Bellybutton Tour (1991), in Germany, but don't know much else about the recording, although it is of fine quality. The setlist is pretty much the same as for the other 1991 show previously posted (Santa Cruz, CA - link here), although this one adds a few different dynamite cover songs to their own stellar compositions, including the opener, 'Hold Your Head Up' (Argent), 'Let 'em In' (McCartney), used as an Intro to 'That is Why', and their closer Fleetwood Mac's 'Go Your Own Way'. Enjoy!

Here's some more Jason Falkner, from a few years later, and this time with a full back-up band, which is relatively rare for him. Jason Falkner - Live Solo Acoustic (1997-98?)
Jason Falkner
Solo Acoustic set
Unknown date and location (1997-98?)
Audience recording, good quality
vbr mp3 (224-256 kbps)
Here's Jason Falkner in a solo acoustic set, from sometime after his first solo album, Jason Falkner Presents Author Unknown (1996). Actual date and location are unknown, as no info came with the files I received for this, but since the set consists predominantly of songs from his first album, with only one song ('Eloquence') from his second album, Can You Still Feel? (1999), I'm assuming the set was probably sometime after his first album, but a ways before his second, so I would guess somewhere around around 1997 or early 1998. If anyone else his any info on this set, let me know. Anyway, as we learned from the previous posts, Jason, a talented singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist, was briefly a member of Jellyfish (1990-91) and The Grays (1993-1994), but then went out on his own, as he never seemed to like being part of a band. And he really took being on his own seriously, as he plays all the instruments on all the songs for both of his first 2 solo releases. His first album was highly acclaimed, but received little public recognition, and even skimpier sales. And a similar story for his second album. Yet, he has continued to carry on, to make and release quality albums and musical projects over the years since that time. He has a strong core group of fans that have followed his every move and consider him something of a power pop genius. So, here's Jason Falkner in an earlier, solo acoustic setting. After This, I'll post some more Jason from a few years later, and more electric even, with a band.
Tracklist:
1. I Live
2. Hectified
3. Miss Understanding
4. Eloquence

6. Afraid Himself to Be
7. Johnsberg, Illinois
8. Don't Show Me Heaven
9. I Go Astray
10. Become Anita Trapped
11. A Lot to Learn

Jellyfish

The Catalyst, Santa Cruz, CA
Audience recording, very good quality
mp3 @ 320 kbps
Glad to see that we do have some fans of Jellyfish here. So, here's some more from the wonderful Jellyfish for all of you, this time from their earlier tour, in support of their first album, Bellybutton (1990). So, Jason Falkner is included in the band here. This earlier set features some interesting covers (Badfinger, McCartney, etc.) in addition to their entire first album and some additional tracks. This appears to be a very good-sounding audience recording, and the band is in fine form and in great spirits. So, here is a bit earlier taste of Jellyfish and their Power Pop extraordnaire in concert. I have more Jellyfish if there is enough interest in it. Let me know.

The Grays - 1993 - Pre Sham Bo Gig
1993
Pre Sham Bo Gig (unknown venue and location)
Audience recording, good quality
mp3 @ 320 kbps
Here's some more from The Grays, a very short-lived Power Pop supergroup, this time with a rare live recording from before the release of their only album (Ro Sham Bo, 1994). Not only does this include songs that were not on their album, such as 'Strings' and 'I Go Astray', as well as 'Oh Nevermind' and 'Blessed' (which were featured on the previously posted rehearsal boot), but this also represents one of the only decent-quality live concert recordings of The Grays known to exist. Unfortunately, I do not have any further info regarding where or when this show took place (but much thanks again to Willard's Wormholes for making this available, and Jay Strange, who originally sent it to Willard). So, once again, here's a chance to hear more from the brief but enticing musical legacy of The Grays.
Tracklist:
Everybody’s World (7:13)
Same Thing (4:03)
Spooky (5:17)
Oh Nevermind (3:19)
Blessed (4:52)
Strings (3:18)
Both Belong (4:31)
I Go Astray (4:28)
All You Wanted (4:20)

The Grays - 1994 - Companion (rehearsals and radio sessions)
1994
Companion: Rehearsals and Radio Sessions
Studio and radio recordings, very good quality
mp3 @ 256 kbps
OK, while we're in the realm of quality Power Pop, and in particular, delving into short-lived, neglected, and underappreciated bands, let's move from the 'eighties up to the 'nineties now, and feature a somewhat legendary (in Power Pop circles) but little-known temporary assemblage that was known as The Grays. This very brief, but productive union of three talented singer-songwriters and multi-instrumentalists, Jason Falkner (previously with The Three O'Clock, Jellyfish, and later to go on to an impressive solo career), Jon Brion (worked with Aimee Mann, the eels, and others), and Buddy Judge (?), along with drummer Dan McCarroll, only produced one released album, the highly acclaimed, but sales-challenged and now out of print Ro Sham Bo (1994). Nonetheless, the high quality of their only album together is mind-boggling, it is just a sensational pop-rock album, with all three songwriters sharing, combining, and contributing great songs, wonderful melodies, a great sound, and shimmering pop production. It is quite possibly better than anything else any of them have been associated with (and since that includes Jellyfish and Jason's solo work, that's saying quite alot). Now, I have to admit that I had never heard of them before either (I had previously heard some Jellyfish and Jason Falkner solo (and liked them), but had never heard of The Grays, until just recently, when they were featured at Willard's Wormholes (much thanks, Willard!), and let's just say that I was mightily impressed and wanted to pass them along to you here. Although I can't post their official album release here (but perhaps Willard can help you there), I can post these unofficial recordings, which consist of some studio rehearsals, covers, acoustic takes, and radio sessions, to give you a taste of what they sounded like, and what such a shame it was that they couldn't have stayed together long enough to make more of this music. Still not convinced to give them a listen? Well, how about this enticing description of their music (from their Wikipedia page) as being Beatlesque, but with a harder edge. Yeah, sounds pretty good to me (and the all acoustic takes are wonderful, too).
Tracklist:
1. Complicated (Rolling Stones cover) (3:13)
2. He’s Frank (Monochrome Set cover) (2:49)
3. Blessed (Simon & Garfunkel cover) (4:27)

7. Very Best Years (acoustic) (3:28)
8. Same Thing (acoustic) (3:42)
