BoDeans - 1989-12-31 - Park West, Chicago, IL (WXRT Broadcast)

BoDeans
1989-12-31
Park West, Chicago, IL

FM Radio Broadcast recording (WXRT), very good quality
Mp3 @ 192 kbps

To salute the tradition of New Year's Eve rock concerts, here's another in our series of quality New Year's Eve shows. Here's the BoDeans in a classic NYE show from 1989, captured right at the band's peak years (after Home-1989, and shortly before the release of Black and White-1990). This excellent, but all too short set (surely edited down for radio broadcast) from Chicago was broadcast by WXRT-FM. As a bonus, a couple of vintage seasonal tracks (1987 Christmas single tracks) from the boys are also included, with originals, the lovely 'Christmas Time', and the uniquely strange and incessant jazz/punk/hip-hoppish rocker 'Jingle Bell Rock' (definitely NOT a remake of the familiar Bobby Helms classic of the same name). Happy New Year! to all, and let's hope 2017 is a much better year all around than 2016 was.

Check it out.

BoDeans - 1992-02-17 - Atlanta, GA (WestWood 1 radio show)

BoDeans
1992-02-17 (Broadcast date, recording date unknown)
Center Stage, Atlanta, GA

Pre-FM Broadcast recording (Westwood One In Concert 92-08), excellent quality
Available in both Lossless (FLAC) and mp3 (320 kbps) versions

Here's a short but very sweet radio show from the American Midwest 'roots-rockin' BoDeans, from 1992, which just may be around the period when they were at their very best, and certainly in their prime. This show came on the heels of 2 of their best albums (Home, 1989 and Black & White, 1991) and features primarily songs from those albums, including the seldom heard 'Brand New' from Home (one of my all-time favorites by them). And although they developed a seemingly 'more commercial' pop-rock sound on Black & White, exemplified in 'Paradise' and 'Good Things', mainstream success still eluded them. However, they finally did score a 'hit' after the song 'Closer to Free' from their next album, Go Slow Down (1993), was featured on the TV show Party of Five and became popular. Although the band has many songs that shoulda/coulda been 'hits', this was the only one to gain mainstream success. But the BoDeans have been chugging along as a great American Roots-Rock band for thirty years now, putting out many fine albums and great live shows. Certainly another in a long line of great, but largely unheralded rock bands. Although still around today, unfortunately Sam Llanas, co-founder and half of the driving spirit of the band (along with Kurt Neumann), abruptly quit the group in 2011 to go solo. But Kurt has added a couple new members and is continuing the fine tradition of the BoDeans, having released a new album, American Made, in 2012.

FM Broadcast (WXRT-FM), excellent quality

To wrap up my 'Spring Cleaning' boots, here's a fine show from those vastly under-appreciated Midwestern roots-rockers, The BoDeans. This is a WXRT-FM broadcast (in excellent quality) of the album release (for 1993's Go Slow Down) concert at Tower Records in Chicago. Kurt, Sammy, and the band perform a nice mix of past favorites and 'new' tunes from the album for this hour-long concert event. Also included is a post-concert radio interview segment with Kurt and Sammy about the album.

BoDeans - 1988-04-20 - Boston

BoDeans
1988-04-20
The Metro, Boston, MA
WBCN FM Radio Broadcast
Sound quality A-
mp3 @ 320

Here's another great Midwestern 'Roots Rock' band that never quite got the recognition and appreciation they deserved. Lead by Sam lllanas and Kurt Neumann, The BoDeans have endured through thick and thin as a hard-working rock band, and they are still performing today. Unfortunately, for a band that has toured extensively over the years, there are very few shows available. This is the best one I've come across, a high quality radio broadcast from 1988 that highlights songs from their first two albums. However, this comes a full year before what I consider by far their best album and touring period (Home, 1989, tours 1989-1993), thus, as good as this is, it doesn't include any of my most favorite BoDeans songs. If anyone has or knows of the existence of good quality shows from the 1989 or 1991 tours, I would love to get them. But, for now, this serves as a fine introduction to the BoDeans.
