Timbuk3
1987-04-24
Cabaret Metro,
Chicago, IL

FM Broadcast recording, excellent quality
Available in both Lossless (FLAC) and Mp3 (32 kbps) versions

After I posted that very fine 1988 Timbuk3 show a couple weeks ago and lamented that there were so few good recordings of them available, fellow music blogger Rob-in-Brevard (who runs the excellent dbs-repercussion blog, your stop for all things dB's and related music) let me know that he had some additional high-quality shows from Timbuk3 that I had not heard, which he graciously sent over to me. And they did not disappoint. Here is one of those, from 1987, on tour to support their first album, Greetings From Timbuk3 (1986). This is an excellent FM Broadcast recording of Pat and Barbara, still in the early days of Timbuk3, where they basically play the whole first album plus a few extras. I've added a couple of additional songs (only songs different) from another similar show from around that same time.

Tracklist:
01. - intro
02. I Just Want To Make Love To You
03. Don't Stop Now
04. Just Another Movie
05. Cheap Black And White
06. Friction
07. Facts About Cats
08. Dancer Fever
09. - intro 2
10. Reverend Jack & His Roamin' Cadillac Church
11. Life Is Hard
12. Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades
13. - band intro
14. I Need You
15. - crowd
16. Hairstyles And Attitudes
17. In My Jam Box
18. Why Don't We Try To Get Along
Bonus Tracks (1987-04-20 - Toronto, FM Broadcast):

Timbuk3 - 1988-08-16 - The Catalyst, Santa Cruz, CA

Timbuk3
August 16, 1988
The Catalyst, Santa Cruz, CA

Audience Recording, very good quality
Available in both Lossless (FLAC) and Mp3 (320 kbps) versions

Here is a wonderful rare find. A high-quality live recording of a full-length show from the great underappreciated alt-rock band Timbuk3. Timbuk3, of course, were the duo of Pat and Barbara K MacDonald (initially backed by recorded bass/drum tracks on a boombox, later as a 4-piece band), and as I have previously said about them "Timbuk3's music featured a dark, cynical outlook combined with clever, biting wit and humor set to strong melodic tunes and quirky harmony vocals" (see previous posts), and they were together from around 1985-1995. This recording is particularly special because there are very few available live recordings of Timbuk3 (especially complete full-length shows). This show also comes from a great period for the band, following their 2nd album, Eden Alley (1988). Thus, this show features many songs from that 2nd album (in addition to their 1st) that were not played at the previous show I posted (from 1989 following their 3rd album, Edge of Allegiance, and the only other full-length live recording I know of), as well as a few additional unique songs, such as their own special version of 'I Just Want to Make Love with You' and 'I Love You'. All in all, a wonderful show, and a rare gem to add to the known recordings of Timbuk3, a sadly underappreciated band.

Tracklist:

03. Reverend Jack & His Roamin' Cadillac Church

08. Life Is Hard
09. The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades
10. Easy
11. Reckless Driver
12. Assholes on Parade
13. Welcome to the Human Race
14. Too Much Sex (not enough affection)
15. Little People Make Big Mistakes
16. I Love You

P.S. For those interested in Timbuk3 and what pat mAcdonald (that's how he spells his name now) has been doing since that time, be sure to check out the website for Pat's latest band, Purgatory Hill (https://purgatoryhill.com/home). It contains much info, lyrics, and music from all stages of pAt's career, including free streams and downloads of most of his recorded music as well as misc. demos, outtakes, etc. (located on his hidden listening room page here). It really is a treasure trove of his music.

Timbuk3 - 1989-11-04 - Paradise Theater, Boston, MA

Timbuk3
November 4, 1989
Paradise Theater, Boston, MA

Audience master recording, very good quality
Available in both Lossless (FLAC) and mp3 (320 kbps) versions

Here's a rare treat that I only recently discovered (thanks to mediaaddict for posting this on G101 forum). This is the only full-length concert recording of the wonderful Timbuk3 that I know of, so it is great to be able to post it here. This comes from 1989, on tour in support of their 3rd great album, Edge of Allegiance, which contains even more pointed political and social commentary than their previous albums, all while maintaining that dark and edgy cynical humor. Just great stuff from a totally unique band. By this time the duo of Pat and Barbara MacDonald had added a drummer for their live shows, and would shortly add a bass as well to become a full-fledged band. But this show comes at a good time in the band's history, featuring a variety of songs from their first 3 albums (which were their best), as well as a few non-album tracks, and a revamped version (slower, darker, funkier) of their one hit single ('The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades'). All in all, a wonderful show from a very talented (and much-missed) band.
