Here's more recent Jackson Browne, with performances from his wonderful Austin City Limits show, which was broadcast last November (2021). The performances here are excellent, as Jackson plays a few new songs from his 2021 album, Downhill From Everywhere, as well as many favorites from throughout his career. The show features Jackson's still-great voice and songs, as well as his awesome band and arrangements. Special guest Leslie Mendelson joins Jackson to sing the song they wrote together ('A Human Touch'), and Jackson concludes the show with a rousing double dose from For Everyman (1973), with 'Take It Easy' seguing directly into 'Our Lady of The Well', just like on the album, and then each band member taking a brief solo before the song concludes. A Wonderful show.

Jackson Browne - 2020-2021 Live From Home Series, Vol.2

Jackson Browne

2020-2021 - various dates
Updated - Live From Home Series Vol. 2
(Additional performances recorded from his home during the pandemic, some for various charitable causes, others just for fans, and made available to the public on Youtube)
Mp3 @ 320 kbps

Last summer I posted a compilation of songs from Jackson Browne that were recorded Live from his Home and made available on YouTube throughout the pandemic. Well, here are more songs to add to that collection, as Jackson continued to release additional Live From Home songs throughout last year. I was just going to add them to the original collection, but since there were several, I thought it would be better to put them into a new post so all could see it and download if interested. Thus, I've titled this Vol. 2, but really it  should just be added to the end of the previous collection to make one comprehensive compilation, and I have continued the numbering (starting at #16) to coincide with the earlier collection (I included a bonus track of 'My Clevelend Heart' in the earlier collection which was from a TV show and not Live From Home, and since a new Live From Home version of My Cleveland Heart was included in the new batch, I have replaced that #16 with the new collection). So, these were all recorded and/or posted to Youtube after the my initial collection (July 2021), with the exception of 'Something Fine' which actually was recorded much earlier (02/06/2011), but that was still recorded from home and was made available to the public within the 2020-2021 window included here.  Once again, some of these were performances made for charitable causes, but many appear to be just songs Jackson performed directly for Youtube broadcast. And Once again, these intimate performances highlight the greatness of Jackson and his music, as well as his excellent current band members. Anyway, here is an additional installment of his Live From Home Series, with the total making a fine concert-length performance. Great stuff!

Tracklist:
16. Pretty Little Shoes (John Lee Ziegler)
17. These Days
18. Something Fine

20. My Cleveland Heart

2020-2021 - various dates
Live From Home Series
(Performances recorded from his home for various charitable causes and made available to the public on Youtube)

Here's something a little different, mainly in that it features recent performances, rather than quite old ones. As we all know, Live in-person music performances were shut down during the pandemic, and are only now just beginning to come back in any form. But as we did for so many other activities, many musicians found ways to keep performing through Zoom and virtual concerts from their homes over the internet. And although this could not really substitute for real Live shows, it did give us the opportunity to see some very intimate, personal performances and stripped down songs from many great artists. And most of these performances were freely available for viewing and listening through Youtube or other online outlets. Some of the wonderful artists that provided an abundance of 'home' concerts and performances were Norah Jones, Melissa Etheridge, Ben Folds, Neil Finn, Grace Potter, Sheryl Crow, Brandi Carlisle, Richard Thompson, John Fogerty, and many others. Fellow music blogger Paul over at his wonderful site 'Albums That Should Exist' has compiled many of these internet home performances into pseudo-albums for listening purposes. Another great artist that has made a series of these types of performances is Jackson Browne. He has made many individual song performances from his home for various charitable organizations he supports, and after their use for those charities they have been released onto Youtube for all to enjoy. And since no one else has compiled these performances into an audio album compilation yet, I thought that I had to do it. And some of these performances are just fantastic (all are good, but some excel to another level). They sound so good, the songs are great, Jackson's voice is still as clear and pure as ever (and he is 72!), and these tasteful arrangements, most with additional guitar accompaniment (Greg Leisz on slide or steel guitar or Val McCallum on lead guitar, as well as a couple w/full band) are just excellent (a particular highlight is the beautiful guitar leads of Val McCallum on 'Before the Deluge' and 'Our Lady of the Well'). These are all performances from 2020-2021 and are available on Youtube (thus full video are available). Jackson will be releasing his 15th album, titled Downhill From Everywhere, later this month. I have added a bonus track (not from home concerts) from a recent appearance on the Jimmy Kimmel Live TV show where Jackson plays a new song from the album. So, enjoy these new (recent, at least) solo, duo, and small group performances of some of Jackson's greatest songs, as well as several interesting covers in these Live From Home special performances.

Jackson Browne - Golden Slumbers (Live-Rarities Fan Compilation) Volumes 1-5

Jackson Browne
Golden Slumbers Volumes 1-5 (Complete 6-CD fan compilation of rarities and live recordings)

Soundboard (and FM Broadcast) recordings, Excellent quality (overall)
Available in both Lossless (FLAC) and mp3 (320 kbps) versions
Artwork also included

Here's a real treat for fans of Jackson Browne, the complete Golden Slumbers fan compilation, which is an excellent rarities collection that I have been trying to get my hands on for several years now, previously to no avail. But thanks to a kindly reader of the blog from the Netherlands (Thanks CVE!), who generously sent me CD copies of the full set, I now have it and can share it here.  This is a great set that brings together many bits & pieces, duets, live performances, radio sessions, one-of-a-kind moments, and miscellaneous rarities from throughout Jackson's career, including many one-off performances from various charity and benefit shows and rare backing vocal stints with others. It also includes a couple full-length live shows. But the main thing that makes this set so great is the superb sound quality of the bulk of the recordings. This is just an excellent sounding collection, with top-notch sound and recording quality across the board (and actually, the one instance where the sound was not top-notch - for the 1976-03-02 Tulane show, a much better quality (PreFM) version has more recently come available, so I have substituted the higher quality version for the one originally included with this set - So, the quality has been upgraded here, to remain superb throughout). This was originally available as a 3-CD set back around 1996-1998, but then additional volumes were added in subsequent years, but has been very difficult to find. So, here is the complete set. Hopefully posting this won't be a problem, but it does contain several individual songs that have been commercially released, but mostly on fairly obscure or out of print charity albums, soundtracks, or albums of other artists. Anyway, I have been enjoying this very much recently, some very interesting performances, and hope you like it too. (Note: some of the info about the songs included is incomplete or not accurate. This is inherent in the original set. I started to try to make some corrections or updates to the information, but didn't make it past the first disc, as it was just too time-consuming and didn't seem worth it, so I apologize for the incomplete info about some of the songs)

Jackson Browne (and full band) - 1978 - BBC In Concert - London

Jackson Browne (and Full Band)
1978 (unknown date)
BBC In Concert
Shepherd's Bush Theatre, London, UK
FM Broadcast recording, very good quality
Available in both Lossless (FLAC) and mp3 (320 kbps) versions

Here's one more Jackson Browne show from the '70's to wrap up the summer and the holiday weekend, this one from Jackson's Running On Empty Tour in 1978. For his 5th album, Jackson planned to do a live album, but a live album that was different from any other. Rather than just release live concert versions of his hits, Jackson wanted to do all new material, and what's more, he envisioned not just a live album, but a concept album specifically about Life on the Road for a touring rock band, recorded completely on the road. And that's what he did. Running On Empty consisted of all previously unreleased songs (some original, some covers) that all dealt with some aspect of being on the road, recorded on stage at shows, backstage, in hotel rooms, and even on the tour bus while driving from Maine to New Jersey. It was a brilliant concept, excellently executed, and once again, with great songwriting. At the time it was released in late 1977, (and perhaps because of the inclusion of some cover songs) some didn't quite get it and dismissed it as Jackson's least ambitious album, or Jackson-lite, but it went on to become the biggest album of Jackson's career, and lead by such iconic songs as 'Running On Empty', 'Love Needs a Heart', 'You Love the Thunder', and 'The Load Out'. The song 'Running On Empty', in particular, really hit a nerve and captured a feeling in people, becoming an anthem of our troubled times. In this fine-sounding BBC radio show from the subsequent 1978 tour, the core songs from Running On Empty (7 songs played) provide the bulk of the show, including the album and show finale of 'The Load Out-Stay', with just a few of his earlier classic songs included. So, as the summer winds down, hit the road with Jackson and Running On Empty.

Jackson Browne - 1976-11-06 - 'Soundstage' TV show, Chicago, IL

Jackson Browne (w/ David Lindley and full band)
1976-11-06
PBS Soundstage TV show, Live at WTTW Studios, Chicago, Illinois,
'Chicago Soundstage 1976'

Stereo FM broadcast (simulcast) recording, good quality
mp3 @ 224 kbps

Moving forward with more Jackson Browne, in late 1976 Jackson released his 4th album, The Pretender, and this TV show (PBS' Soundstage) performance was staged shortly after it's release. And although the album was a success, this was a very difficult period for Jackson and his family, because just months earlier, in March 1976,  Jackson suffered the crushing loss of his wife, Phylis Major, who took her own life with an overdose of sleeping pills. Despite being devastated by this loss, Jackson eventually worked to finish the album by fall, adding a couple of songs that dealt with the tragedy ('Sleep's Dark and Silent Gate' and 'Here Comes Those Tears Again'). He began performing and touring again in late 1976 to support the album, which went on to become his biggest success up to that time. For this Soundstage televised concert show, Jackson sticks with songs from Late For the Sky for the bulk of the show (6 songs, including 'Farther On', which was not included in the previous 'Late' show I offered), introducing only 2 songs from the new album (the opening 'The Fuse', and the closer 'The Pretender'). And once again, Jackson puts on a great show, if not a bit somber, with heartfelt renditions of these classic songs. The recording is from a very good FM broadcast, but like many older cassette recordings, shows some telltale artifacts of limited frequency range, tape wobble, and some hiss issues. But still, overall, is quite good and the show is certainly of merit and well-worth repeated listens.

Here's some more vintage live Jackson Browne, from his 1974 Tour, with David Lindley and a full band this time. Apparently, there are not many available recordings from this tour, so this is great to have. This was my absolute favorite time period for Jackson, and although I adore several of Jackson's albums, I think his 1974 album, Late For The Sky, was his definitive masterpiece, and one of my favorite albums of all-time. These may not be his most famous, popular, or 'commercial' songs, but they are among his very best, and collectively, attain a level of heartfelt personal and emotional songwriting that has rarely been achieved.  It retains a very special place in my heart, and was very meaningful to me and my development. The depth of feeling and emotions contained not only in the lyrics, but the music as well, that Jackson was able to capture and convey in this album was extraordinary. The songs are so personal, yet express such universal feelings and expressions of hope, longing, frustration, and desperation. Personally, this album got me through some very difficult times making the transition from high school to college to adult, and it still is very powerful every time I listen to it. And this tour, not surpisingly, contained more songs from Late For the Sky, than any other, so it is also a personal favorite of mine. This show features 6 tracks from Late For the Sky (although it is lacking 'Farther On' and 'The Late Show', 2 other stand-out tracks that would have been great to have here), as well as some favorites from his first 2 albums. Bonnie Raitt and her band also played on the same bill, so this show also features some guests, bass-guitar-tuba player Freebo (from Bonnie's band) on some songs, and Bonnie Raitt herself joins Jackson for the encore, a rarely heard duet version of 'Cowboy Boots'. I don't know the origin of this show, but it seems to be a soundboard recording (or FM broadcast), so the sound is pretty good; however, it is also obvious that it comes from an old cassette recording, with some of the inherent sound limitations that came with most cassette recordings from the 1970's. But overall, it is wonderful to get to hear this show from this period in Jackson's history. Great stuff.

Jackson Browne (w/ David Lindley) - 1973-8-15 - Bryn Mawr, PA

Jackson Browne (with David Lindley)
August 15, 1973
The Main Point, Bryn Mawr, PA

Pre-FM soundboard recording, excellent quality
mp3 @ 192 kbps

Here's some more Jackson Browne from around the same period, also an excellent sounding recording, but this one has a few different songs (including an impromptu fiddle reel from Lindley while Jackson had some technical difficulties). Another great performance all around. Although this has a listed date as 8/15, that is actually not likely, as Jackson was opening for America all through August, and those dates did not include Lindley. Instead, this is most likely from some time in September, the exact date is not clear (not that it really matters), but it is another classic show from this period.

Jackson Browne (w/ David Lindley) - 1973-09-27 - New York

Jackson Browne (with David Lindley)
September 27, 1973
RCA Studios, New York, NY

Pre-FM soundboard recording, excellent quality
Available in both Lossless (FLAC) and mp3 (320 kbps) versions

Sorry for the long gap between posts, but I have just been very busy the past month, and have been away much of that time, without access to my music files. But now, I will continue with a few more Jackson Browne shows, from early in his career. This is an excellent quality recording, from around the time of the release of his 2nd album, For Everyman, in fall 1973 (although some sources for this show claim it is from 1972, instead, but based on the setlist - including several For Everyman songs that he was not playing in '72 - I'd stick with 1973). Here we have a nice mix of songs from the first 2 albums, as well as a few that are not on any album, and with the wonderful David Lindley accompanying Jackson (for the first of many times over the years) on fiddle, guitar, and mandolin. Just a wonderful show from these early years.

Jackson Browne - 2004-03-16 - New York - RnR HOF Celebration Concert

Jackson Browne (& Friends)
2004-3-16
Beacon Theatre, NYC, NY

RnR HOF Celebration Concert (Night after Jackson's HOF Induction)
Audience recording, good quality
mp3 (VBR 160-320 kbps) files

More Jackson Browne, from quite a bit later in his career. On March 15, 2004, Jackson Browne was inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall Fame, with his induction speech and comments made by Bruce Springsteen. On the following night, March 16, Jackson staged a celebration concert at the Beacon Theatre in New York with guest appearances from some of his friends and music colleagues, and here it is for you. This fun and energetic show features songs from all throughout his illustrious career, from the early songs of 'Doctor My Eyes', 'These Days', and 'Take It Easy', up through several songs from his most recent album (at that time), The Naked Ride Home, this is a very entertaining show, and the inclusion of the guests just add to the enjoyment. It's not a great (audience) recording, but it is pretty good quality overall. For some perspective and historical interest, I've also included some bonus audio tracks from the actual HOF ceremony the night before, including Bruce's induction speech, Jackson's acceptance speech, and Jackson's HOF performance of Runnin' On Empty (these audio tracks were extracted from the youtube videos, so are of lesser quality, but since they are primarily spoken words, they are just fine). So, enjoy Jackson & friends celebrating his well-deserved induction into the HOF.

Jackson Browne - Song Traveler (Live Solo Acoustic Compilation 1970-2004)

Jackson Browne
Song Traveler
8-CD Compilation of Live Solo Acoustic Performances 1970-2004

Various audience recordings, mostly good to very good quality
mp3 @ 320 kbps

Here's a special gift for all the Jackson Browne fans out there, an 8-CD fan compilation that puts together "all the best available solo acoustic performances" from throughout Jackson's concert career (or at least from 1970-2004). Although Jackson is also fine when playing with a band, he is at his best in these solo acoustic performances, and they show off his artistry and mastery as a songwriter and performer, giving subtle new meanings to old and new favorites and classics. The first 5 discs contain Jackson's songs roughly arranged by songwriting period (from earliest to latest), with discs 6&7 devoted to covers, and disc 8 with rare and alternate versions of classic songs. It's a very thorough and impressive collection, and an undoubtedly painstaking and time-consuming endeavor, compiling performances from literally several dozens of shows. Naturally, the sound quality does vary somewhat from show to show, but overall quality is very good. Now, this is not my compilation, but I have no idea who originally put this excellent compilation together (I got it from another site, and it came with little supporting info). From a google search, one of the torrent sites attributes it to someone called Jayhawk, so thanks to them, or whoever it was, 'cause this is some great stuff. The compilation even includes a track from the 2002 Maine solo acoustic show I was at ('Nothing But Time', which was originally written and recorded after a show in Maine for the Runnin' On Empty album. Although listed here as being in Bangor, the show was actually in Orono, on the University of Maine campus). Anyway, although a bit too much to take in all at once, this is a real treat for us fans. Enjoy.

Wow! Here is a real find, and I am very happy to finally be able to present it here. This something I have been looking for ever since I heard about it years ago, the legendary Criterion Demos made by Jackson Browne in 1970. It includes early demo versions of most of the songs from his first official album, but more importantly, about half of the 19 tracks are never-released songs by Jackson. Some of these unknown songs are startlingly good, but were surprisingly never developed any further for future release. Unlike the much earlier Nina Demos (made in 1967), which contained mainly undistinguished, forgettable, or uncharacteristic-sounding songs (but still historically interesting), this is the Jackson Browne that we know and love, just in the early stages. Thus, this is a treasure trove for fans, but has been very difficult to find for even dedicated Jackson Browne fans. No more. Here it is.

Background: Jackson signed a co-publishing agreement with Hollywood's Criterion Music in the fall of 1969. These demo tracks were recorded in early 1970, prior to his hooking up with David Geffen, which took place later in 1970 and the recording of his first album which took place in 1971. In fact, it was this demo version of "Jamaica Say You Will" from the recording session at Criterion Studios -- which Jackson sent to David Geffen -- that attracted Geffen's attention. The track included backing by J.D. Souther (on drums?), Glenn Frey, and Ned Doheny. This was not an official album, nor was it ever intended as an official release. It was merely Jackson Browne making some demo recordings in his role as a staff writer for Criterion Music. These recordings were intended to be used to promote Jackson's songs to other artists for recording.

Tracks:
01. Last Time I Was Home (2:57)
02. Jamaica Say You Will (3:45)
03. Song For Adam (5:18)
