Steve Hackett - 2024-03-11 - Cruise to the Edge 2024: Awakening, Norwegian Pearl, Stardust Theater

Steve Hackett

Cruise to the Edge 2024: Awakening
Aboard the Norwegian Pearl, Stardust Theater
Audience recording, very good quality
mp3 @ 320 kbps

Last month was the Cruise to the Edge 2024, a unique Prog rock festival held aboard a Cruise Ship, and this year's talent lineup may have been their very best. The Cruise went from Miami to Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, with dozens of prog acts and concerts along the way and back. Featured on this year's cruise was such Prog mainstays as Marillion, Steve Hackett, Big Big Train, Riverside, Flying Colors, The Flower Kings, Haken, Symphony X, Queensryche, Lifesigns, Airbag, Adrian Belew, Jordan Rudess, Steve Morse, and several others. Some recordings from those shows have started to emerge, mainly on Youtube, and mostly just a few selected songs, but a couple of audience recording of full shows have also come forward. Here is a show from master guitarist Steve Hackett. This is a scaled-down (about 1 hour 15 min) festival version of his current Foxtrot at Fifty show, but features his magnificent full band. He starts off with a few songs from his new album The Circus and the Nightwhale and one from his previous solo album, then goes into the primary trio of songs from Genesis' Foxtrot (including the epic Supper's Ready) before closing with Los Endos (from Trick of the Tail). A wonderful festival-length show, albeit abbreviated from his full-length show. Check it out.

New Album Roundup - Capsule Reviews and Comments - Early 2024

New Album Reviews - Early 2024

Hey, it's time to through some of the best albums of the year so far. I usually spend the first month or so of a new year catching up on recommended albums from the previous year that I missed or had not yet heard, and that was certainly true for this year, as there were several albums that came out right near the end of the year, as well as several interesting albums I heard about in various year-end lists that I was not familiar with. So, I had been listening to dozens of 2023 albums through the early weeks of 2024, as I waited for the new crop of 2024 albums to start coming out. So, before highlighting the best of the new 2024 albums, Here are a few of the best of those 2023 albums that I did not hear until 2024.

2023 late arrivals:

Regna - Cinema (2023)
Regna is a relatively new progressive rock band, from Barcelona, Spain. This is their first full-length album, following an EP, Meridian (2015). And this band certainly bases its sound on the classic Prog of the early 1970's, harkening back to the style of Yes, Genesis, Camel, and others of the time, but also adding some modern elements as well. Their strength is their musicianship and instrumental prowess, with dazzling displays of proggy goodness, as exemplified on their 20-min epic, Accolade. However, the vocals are a bit of a weak spot, as they are just OK, functional but nothing special, and with a single vocalist, there is little in the way of harmony or backing vocals throughout. But overall, the strength of the songs and playing provide a very good album of classic-style prog. Best Tracks: Tangent, Accolade, Spyglass. Rating: 3.5ó

Lalu - The Fish Who Wanted to be King (2023)
Lalu is a prog band formed and lead by French keybordist-composer Vivien Lalu. This is their 4th album, following closely after 2022's Paint the Sky, and their 2nd album to feature premier vocalist Damian Wilson (Ayreon, Star One, Headspace, Threshold) and he shines throughout the album. Although this band has been designated as progressive metal, this most recent album is really not that at all, fortunately, as it is more melodic and contains more elements of AOR style rock. I would call it more of a mixture of melodic rock, Neo prog, and classic symphonic prog, with some more modern, heavier, and jazzy elements as well. And it is quite wonderful, a delight from start to finish. There is certainly more than enough great classic proggy instrumental flourishes throughout to satisfy the prog fans, but also maintains solid melodic lines and themes (to not scare away the non-prog rock fans), as well as a diversity of styles, creating a fun, entertaining and unique blend of driving, rockin' prog songs, from the shorter, jazzy instrumental, Reversal of Fortune, to the many highlights of the more epic length Amnesia 1916 and title track. Best Tracks: Amnesia 1916, The Fish Who Wanted to Be King, Deoxyribonucleic Acid, Digital Fear, Reversal of Fortune. Rating: 4ó .

David Longdon -  Wild River (2023 Remastered Reissue, originally released 2004)
David Longdon was the wonderful lead vocalist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from the prog band Big Big Train who died in a tragic accident in late 2021. This is the rerelease of an earlier solo album he made prior to his joining Big Big Train. David was one of the best vocalists around, with a pure, heartfelt, majestic quality, but was also a fine instrumentalist, playing guitar, keyboards, harmonica and flute. On this early album, from 2004, his vocals, songwriting, and playing are all in fine form, as he moves through songs of varying styles. Although overall, it might be classified as light rock or pop, he mixes in various styles and influences, including folk, pop, blues, classical, and rock, and all the songs have interesting arrangements and strong melodies. Although this is not quite in the prog style of Big Big Train, the qualities that David brought to the band are clear throughout, from his songwriting and melodic sense, to the intricate arrangements that bring out the best of each song, to of course, his fantastic vocals. This is a great album from a great artist in the early stages of his career. Best Tracks: This House, Vertigo, Mandy, Falling Down to Earth, Honey Trap. Rating: 4ó

2024
It is still early in 2024, but there have already been many great new albums released in these first few months. Here are some of my favorites so far:

Neal Morse - The Restoration: Joseph Part 2
A solid, and improved follow-up to last years's The Dreamer: Joseph Part 1. Once again, Neal has brought in many guest vocalists (Ted Leonard, Matt Smith, Jake Livgren, Nick D'Virgilio, Ross Jennings) to round out the cast of characters in his biblical prog rock opera telling of the story of Joseph, along with his Neal Morse band cohorts guitarist Eric Gillette and keyboardist Bill Hubauer to enhance Neal's own multi-instrumental musicianship. Although a long album (16 tracks, 75 min), and certainly dramatic and theatrical in nature, Neal tries to keep things interesting by varying the tempo and musical styles from song to song. That and the different vocalists, keep things moving through the various stylistic choices of Morse and Co. Mixing in familar prog elements (reminiscent of Spock's Beard, Gentle Giant, ELP, etc) with hard rock, choirs, vocal harmonies, orchestration, jazz, and even a bit of latin swing, as only Neal Morse could.  Although much of this may seem quite familiar to other projects from Morse, he still manages to surprise occasionally, and entertains quite consistently, as it builds to a rousing and satisfying conclusion, and saves the best songs for the last sequence. Better than expected. Best Tracks: My Dream, the Argument, Make Like a Breeze, The Brothers Repent, Restoration, Everlasting, Dawning of a New Day. Rating: 3.5ó

Ellesmere - Stranger Skies
This is the 4th album from Ellesmere, lead by Italian progger Roberto Vitelli, and is firmly in the style of classic symphonic prog ala Genesis and Yes. Vitelli has assembled an accomplished band of musicians  perfectly suited to the prog workout displayed here, with all the intricate instrumental passages and soloing to make successful prog, and are joined on this album by vocalist John Wilkinson, who sings in a voice and style suspiciously similar to Phil Collins. Thus, all the pieces are there, the vocals are fine and the instrumental sections do achieve a grandness and virtuosic satisfaction. However, to me, it just seems a bit too ordinary and run of the mill, and just going through the motions. What is missing here are great songs, as the songs and melodies here are just ok, nothing special. They just are not very engaging or compelling. Great playing all around, but the songs themselves just don't do much for me. Still enjoyable to listen to, but I can't get too excited about it, even with some great musicianship on display. Rating: 3ó

Kyros - Mannequin
Kyros, a UK progressive pop band, lead by the vocals and keyboards of Shelby Logan Warner, has embraced 80's style synth-pop on this, their 5th album. But this is synthpop re-imagined from a decidedly bold progressive rock perspective, for a style that sounds new, but is also quite familiar as well. Very catchy beats and melodies collide with edgy vocals and prog flourishes throughout. Starting off with a more gentle acoustic pop song (Taste the Day), the album moves to an energetic synthpop instrumental (Showtime) before the main features and core of the album take hold, an impressive display of progressive synthpop brilliance for the next 6 songs. Unfortunately, the album falters on the final 2 tracks, when the band goes much darker and heavier (more prog metal) on Technology Killed the Kids IV, which apparently is a continuing series from previous albums, but which does not fit or work at all here, and completely ruins the vibe and feel of the album. The final track, Have Hope, is hyperactive and disjointed, and although has some nice moments, is too much of a chaotic mess. Up until those final 2 tracks, this is a really great album, but have to downgrade it due to the poor finish. Best Tracks: Esoterica, Illusions Inside, The End in Mind, Ghosts of You, Liminal Space, Digital Fear. Rating: 3.5ó

The Pineapple Thief - It Leads To This

Another great album from veteran prog band The Pineapple Thief lead by composer-gutarist-vocalist Bruce Soord, who have really been on a roll since the addition of drummer extraordaire Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree) in 2016. This new album is even stronger than their quite good previous couple albums, Giving it Back (2022) and Versions of the Truth (2020), but doesn't quite reach the pinnacle of Dissolution (2018), which I consider to be their masterwork. This album saw a closer working relationship between Bruce Soord and Gavin Harrison in crafting the songs for the album, actually writing together in the same studio for the first time. The album starts with Put it Right which sets the mood and atmosphere for the album with a soft understated cool, but dark vibe and develops into a slow boil throughout the song. But the album really takes off with the middle series of songs, starting with the title track and its blend of atmosphere, melody, and rhythms. The intensity builds with The Frost amid heavier riffs. Throughout, the understated vocals and melodies of Soord mixed with the dynamic drumming of Harrison, and the rhythms and riffs of the rest of the band create rich and satisfying soundscapes, even with the undercurrents of darkness and unease. This album is a real grower, in that it may not knock you out on first listen, but its subtleties and intricacies develop and is richly rewarding with repeated listens. The band seems even more of a cohesive coordinated unit than on previous albums creating a wonderful listening experience. My only mild criticisms would be that 1) it doesn't stray very far from what they've done previously, similar in style and substance (but so very well done), and 2) It just seems a bit too short (8 tracks, 40 min). It ends rather abruptly, and it just seems it could use one more song to round it out. All in all though, Another gem of an album. Best Tracks: It Leads to This, Every Trace of Us, All That's Left, The Frost, To Forget. Rating: 4ó

Steve Hackett - The Circus and the Nightwhale
The latest from guitarist extraordinaire Steve Hackett (and something like his 30th album), this one is a concept album with a story based on Steve's own life experiences, and is something special, his best album in many years. At 74, and a career spanning more than 55 years, Hackett seems to be stronger than ever, with his Genesis Revisited tours and regular releases of live and new solo albums. This album mixes together songs of many different styles, ranging from classical guitar stylings to dark and ominous heavy prog metal riffs, as well as lighter more melodic pop and rock, with international stylistic flourishes, strong harmony vocals, and yes, even some Genesis-reminiscent passages. Steve has his powerhouse backing band (same as his touring band) as well as some guest artists to bring these songs to life, and the result is a tour de force album of delights, 13 tracks comprising a compact 45 minutes, telling his story in one of the prog highlights of the year.   Best tracks: Enter the Ring, Wherever You Are, Ghost Moon and Living Love, Get Me Out, Into the Nightwhale. Rating: 4ó

Dirt Poor Robins - Firebird

Dirt Poor Robins
are a totally unique band from Louisville, KY, and are essentially the married couple of Neil and Kate DeGraide writing and performing all the songs. They bill themselves as a Theatrical/Cinematic/Singer-Songwriting Rock Band and make genre-defying music, incorporating pop, rock, jazz, prog, musical theater, and nostalgia (music of the 1920's, 30's, 40's, and 50's), usually in elaborate concept albums. Very theatrical, cinematic, but also quite accessible, they weave compelling story songs of varying styles. With this latest album, The Robins create a futuristic sci-fi scenario rooted in pop styles from the 1980's, yet again, encompassing many different styles and genres, but with a bright and exuberant sound throughout. This album may be their most entertaining and accomplished work yet. From the pop gem opener, Political, through to the majestic closer Firebird (based on Stravinsky's Firebird theme), this is a wonderful album, even with a couple of overwrought ballads I did not care for, it is all part of the experience. The only other band I can compare them to is The Dear Hunter, as they both feature that musical diversity and theatricality aspects, yet are so compelling and accessible.  Best Tracks: Political, Holy Roller, So Long to Yesterday, Firebird, You'll Never Hear it Coming. Rating: 4ó

Albion - Lakesongs of the Elbid
Another somewhat new band releasing their first full-length album. Originally formed in 2019, released an EP, Pryderi in 2021. And what a fantastic album this is, with a unique and exciting sound that the band calls folk metal, which mixes Old English-style folk music with classical, hard rock, and prog metal for a rousing sonic journey. But it is much more than that, with a wide range of styles and influences, featuring songs ranging from traditional folk with acoustic guitar and vocal harmonies to a rockin' Sea Shanty all the way to full-on progressive metal, but on most songs creating an exhilarating blend of multiple styles in a bold symphonic prog. This band features guitarist-flutist-vocalist Joe Parrish-James, who has been guitarist for Jethro Tull for their 2 most recent albums, but recently announced he was leaving Tull to concentrate on his other band, Albion. Although there are several similarities with Tull, in that both bands feature a mix of acoustic folk and hard rock, with prominent flute and symphonic arrangements, Albion's sound is uniquely its own, with only occasional similarities with Tull. Actually, the modern band that they are a bit more reminiscent of is the Von Hertzen Brothers. Several songs start out in a mostly folky mode, but then build or explode into full-on symphonic prog powerhouses, while still retaining folk elements. A stunningly good album. Fresh, invigorating, exciting, and exemplifies what Progressive rock is all about. Best Tracks: Pagan Spirit, The Dream of Rhonabwy, Lyn y Fan Fawr (Sister Lake), Arthurian Overture, Camlann, Canens (Maya). Rating: 4.5ó

Big Big Train - The Likes of Us
Big Big Train, one of the premier prog bands of the 2000s, has been through a lot over the past few years. In 2019, half the band (including guitarist Dave Gregory, Andy Poole, Danny Manners, and string player Rachel Hall) quit, leaving the remaining core members (David Longdon, Greg Spawton, Rikard Sjoblom, and Nick D'Virgilio) to regroup and refocus. They did so brilliantly, coming back with the great album Common Ground in 2021, and showing some new directions. However, in late 2021, the band was devastated by the tragic accidental death of lead vocalist-multi-instrumentalis-composer David Longdon, and put the future of the band in doubt. But they have regrouped once again, adding vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Alberto Bravin, as well as Dave Foster on guitar, Oskar Holdorff on keyboards, and Claire Lindley on violin, and released this latest album, and it is another triumphant return for the band. Alerto Bravin brings a different presence to the band, as he doesn't try to sound like Longdon, but has his own style and commanding voice that all his own. He also has added substantially in the songwriting, playing, and arrangements of many of the songs on the album. Although forging on in some new directions, the album maintains the the essence of what makes Big Big Train great, with beautiful melodies, soaring instrumental passages, evocative narratives, and sweeping majestic themes, maintaining effective use of strings and horns, as well occasional bursts of heavier prog instrumental sections. From the shorter more rock-oriented Oblivion, to the beautiful ballads like Love is the Light, to the pastoral splendor and symphonic grandness of Light Left in the Day, to the magnificent epic Beneath the Masts, which has everything one could want in an epic-length BBT song (and will take its place among their greats), the album delivers another astounding chapter in the musical adventures of BBT, and continues their reign, at least for me, at the top of modern progressive rock.  Best Tracks: Beneath the Masts, Miramare, Light Left in the Day, Oblivion, Last Eleven. Rating: 4.5ó

Quick Hits:
Here are some more new albums worth checking out, but ones that I didn't have time to review in full, didn't like as much, or just didn't have much to say about. So here, are just the briefest of comments on these still quite worthy albums.

Caligula's Horse - Charcoal Grace (Inventive, dynamic prog metal album, but too much metal for me) 3ó

ALMO - Reconciliation (Heavy Prog Metal, mostly heavy metal, not enough prog) 2ó

The Smile - Wall of Eyes (another set of half-baked, underdeveloped 'art rock' songs, more like demos or rehearsal sessions, but marginally better than 1st album) 2.5ó

Everything Everything - Mountainhead (Bright, bouncy, modern synthpop, just not that memorable or compelling) 3ó

The Last Dinner Party - Prelude to Ecstasy (Well-done drama pop, just not something I can connect with) 3ó

Emerald City Council - Motion Carries (fun, pop-oriented, accessible, melodic prog rock. Recommended) 3.5ó

Karfagen - Mesages From Afar: Second Nature (More well-crafted and engaging keyboard-led prog from Anthony Kalugin) 3.5ó

The Bardic Depths - What We Like in Stories (gentle melodic prog, nice vocals and arrangements, literate lyrics) 3.5ó

Monkey3 - Welcome to the Machine (Well-done instrumental psychedelic/space-rock inspired by Pink Floyd) 3.5ó

Drfting Sun - Veil (musically impressive prog songs, marred by creepy, distracting vocal performance) 3ó

Professor Caffeine and The Insecurities - Self-Titled (Invigorating, inspired indie rock, with elements of Prog) 3.5ó

Mesa Verde - All is Well (Pleasant, mostly gentle, laid-back, but complex and quirky, indie pop, gets better as it goes on) 3.5ó

BB’s Rating scale:

1ó – Terrible, torturous to have to listen to
1.5ó - Poor, not worth your time
2 ó – Fair, maybe a couple half-way decent songs, but sub-par overall
2.5ó – Average, OK, meh, not bad but not that good either
3ó – Good, solid album, several good songs, but not spectacular. Certainly worthy, but may not be something you come back to very often
3.5ó – Very good album. Some stellar tracks, very enjoyable overall
4ó – Great album, filled with great songs, one that you will want to come back to over and over again
4.5ó – Excellent album, beyond great, superb in every way, just short of a masterpiece
5ó – A Masterpiece, among the greatest albums of its type, and has stood the test of time

So, that's it for now. A lot of really good stuff already this year, with more on the way. What have you been listening to this year? What are some of your favorites thus far?

OK, I'm back with some more classic progressive rock shows. Over the past year or so I've featured several shows from the Mike Millard Masters collection (high quality audience recordings taped by Mike Millard), and today I have another gem from that series, a classic Genesis show from 1976. The 1976 tour was their first without former lead singer Peter Gabriel (who left the band the previous year) and thus the first with Phil Collins as frontman, and that featured music from their first Gabriel-less new album Trick of the Tail. And proving to their critics and fans that not only could they carry on, but thrive as well in their new incarnation, was vitally important to the band. For this tour they brought along legendary drummer Bill Bruford (Yes, King Crimson), the only time he played with Genesis, so Phil could spend most of his time up front of the band. And of course, both the album and tour was a raging success. Borrowing Bruford was a one-time only a temporary thing. For subsequent tours, the also legendary Chester Thompson (Zappa, Weather Report) toured with them on drums. So, this was the only chance to see and hear Bruford with Genesis. And it was a great show, featuring a mix of earlier songs (with Collins on lead vocals for the first time) and the new songs from Trick of the Tail (which were woven together perfectly), showed that Phil could handle the task beautifully. Anyway, here is a great shoe from that tour.

This show features the full Genesis Foxtrot (1972) album, in celebration of its 50th anniversary (and still probably the greatest progressive rock album of all time), as well as selections from Steve's own illustrious solo career from Voyage of the Acolyte (1975) right up to his latest studio album, Surrender Of Silence (2021). And this is a fine audience recording from their recent Ipswich show. The tour moves from UK to Europe next month, and then to the US in 2023. Once again, a tremendous show from Steve and his band, keeping alive the great sounds of classic Genesis.

Steve Hackett - 2022-04-10 - Hart Theater at The Egg, Albany, NY

Steve Hackett

2022-04-10
Hart Theater at The Egg, Albany, NY
Audience Recording (Kitty Lickin' Discs), excellent quality
Lossless (FLAC) file

Legendary progressive rock guitarist Steve Hackett recently released a new live album from his 2021-2022 Seconds Out & More Tour, which features all the songs performed on Genesis's classic live album Seconds Out (1977) (which was the last project Steve participated in before leaving the Genesis), as well as several songs from Steve's extensive solo catalog. The official live release was recorded in Manchester, UK last September (9/24/21) as part of the UK leg of the tour. Steve brought the tour to the US in the Spring of 2022. Fortunately there are several quality unofficial recordings available from these shows. Of the several recordings I heard, the best one I found is the one presented here, from Kitty Lickin' productions, an excellent sounding audience recording from The Egg in Albany, NY. In recent years, Steve has further enhanced his appeal and reputation by providing stellar live performances of classic Genesis songs from Steve's and the band's progressive hey days. Steve has assembled a top-notch band to re-invigorate and bring these great songs back in glorious live performances. In previous Genesis Revisited shows, he has done a variety of classic Genesis tracks, as well as full album performances of Selling England by the Pound, and for his latest tour, just started this September (2022) with UK dates, he is currently doing the full Foxtrot album for his Foxtrot at 50 tour (stay tuned for more on this). But today we have the Seconds Out & More show from Albany. The Second's Out show is filled with some of Genesis's greatest songs, including 'Firth of Fifth', 'Cinema Show', 'Dance on a Volcano/Los Endos', and a fantastic full-length rendition of  'Supper's Ready'. Check this out, and if you enjoy this show, consider buying the official live release (which comes with a full blu-ray video of the complete performance). Sensational stuff.

Genesis - 1977-03-27 - Sports Arena, San Diego, CA (Mike Millard Master Recording)

Audience recording (Mike Millard Master Tapes via JEMS), very good quality

Available in both Lossless (FLAC) and Mp3 (320 kbps) versions

Last week I posted what has been called the Last Genesis Concert, capping a more than 50-year career for this legendary band. But I also noted that the current version of the band is a far cry from the peak or 'classic' years of the band. So, today, I have a great show from those more prime years for the band. This is a show from 1977 and a recording that has only recently been 'found' (as thought to have been lost) from the Mike Millard (Mike the MICrophone) master tape series. This tour 1977 tour, of course is what was used to produce the great Seconds Out Live album. But Seconds Out did not include all the songs played at these shows. So here is another full concert from that tour, in a great recording from Millard. Actually, this recording did not include the encore of 'Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' and the closing section of 'The Musical Box', so those have been added from the San Francisco concert 2 days earlier (from the very good PRRP-GS-011 recording). So, the whole concert is here. Although Peter Gabriel was no longer in the band at this point, Steve Hackett still was, and this 1977 tour is considered among the very best Genesis shows ever. So, enjoy this piece of Genesis history and the band still in their glory days.

Here is the last night of Steve Hackett's limited (4-night) 1996 concert tour in Japan, and second half of the PRRP-042 release A Friendly Fold, which featured an all-star prog back-up band (with John Wetton and Ian MacDonald of King Crimson fame) and Steve's re-interpretations of Classic Genesis tracks (following the release of Genesis Revisited). A wonderful show. Although the setlist is the same as the previous night in Osaka (which was previously posted here earlier this year), it's still a treat to hear these progressive pros at work in this show. So, this completes that set of concerts. And although there is nothing played here that would constitute Christmas music, I'm still counting this as a Christmas Concert because it happened during the Christmas Holiday Season, and I'm sure it was a wonderful Christmas gift for all who attended, as well as for Julio, who requested I post this show. So, Ho Ho Ho, here's Steve's version of a Christmas show.

OK, to finish up this look at the career of guitarist Steve Hackett, and to bring things right up to present day, here is a unique intimate  show from last December (2018), where Steve and basically a chamber ensemble of Rob Townsend, Roger King, and John Hackett play an entire acoustic show at Trading Boundaries, the UK venue that is a restaurant, antiques showroom, and has in recent years become a haven for intimate concerts of progressive music.  This was such an interesting and unique show that I just had to include it here. But first, to catch us up on Steve, He continued to tour through most of 2018, through the U.S., South America, and Europe, Then in October played a series of shows in the UK with full Orchestra backing, and ending with a couple acoustic shows at Trading Boundaries in December. Somehow amidst all that touring, he also managed to record a new album, At The Edge of Light, which was released in January 2019.  The rest of 2019 looks to be just as eventful as well, starting with a couple of Cruise shows (see below for more info) in February, and the beginning of his 2019 tour, which will feature playing the entire Selling England By The Pound  album and celebration of 40th Anniversary of Spectral Mornings, and span through Europe, Scandinavia, USA, Canada, and the UK throughout the year. But the show presented here is very unique, not only in the intimate, informal coffeehouse atmosphere, but also in the style and setlist of the songs played. A wonderful experience and great recording of this unique event.

Cruise to the Edge: Another unique experience that Steve Hackett has participated in in recent years is the Cruise to the Edge, an actual voyage on a Cruse ship that features nearly round the clock live shows from a plethora of Progressive rock artists and acts, from classic bands such as Yes, Soft Machine, Brand X, PFM, and Steve Hackett, to newer and lesser-known bands carrying on the tradition of Progressive rock today. These Cruises have been conducted each year in February over the past several years, leaving from Tampa FL, traveling to Key West and Cozumel, and back, with a packed schedule of concerts every day. Billed as "The Greatest Prog Rock Vacation on Earth" (here is the Cruise website:cruisetotheedge.com). Fortunately, for all of us intrigued by this but who can't actually go on these Cruises, many audience recordings shows from the most recent Cruises (including 2014, 2017, 2018, and just out, 2019, thanks primarily to Lostbrook 2.0!). I don't have time or space to post them here, but they are available to download at the G101 Lossless Forum (just search for Lostbrook or Cruise to the Edge). Once again this year, Steve was part of the show, along with many great old and new bands worth checking out. Just shows how Progressive music is staying alive and vital right through today.

Acolyte To Wolflight With Genesis Revisited - The Total Experience Tour

Audience recording, very good quality
Available in both lossles (FLAC) and Mp3 (320 kbps) versions

More Steve Hackett! Following the enormously successful Genesis Revisited extended tour (2013-2014) and the release of another acclaimed solo album (Wolflight, 2015), for his next tour Steve wanted to highlight the 40th Anniversary of his first solo album, Voyage of the Acolyte (1975) and feature his 40 years of albums up to his newest release, but he also wanted to continue the excitement that the Genesis Revisited shows captured (and by popular request and demand). So, Steve divided the shows into two  parts, the first featuring a retrospective of his solo career, with emphasis on his early albums (Voyage of the Acolyte and Spectral Mornings) and his latest album, Wolflight, and the second part was a continuation of the Genesis Revisited songs. But rather than play the same Genesis songs as in previous tours, he brought out a whole new assortment of classic Genesis, featuring several songs rarely ever heard live, including 2 great Foxtrot gems, 'Get 'em Out by Friday' and my personal favorite (and underrated masterpiece) 'Can-Utility and the Coastliners' and such tracks as 'The Hairless Heart' and the complete 'Cinema Show'. The only repeated songs from the previous tour was 'The Musical Box' and an encore of 'Firth of Fifth'. It made for a fantastic show. The tour title was a mouthful The "Acolyte to Wolflight with Genesis Revisited - The Total Experience Tour", but the show was even more packed, averaging nearly 3 hrs each night. And Steve did feature Acolyte, including 4 songs from that first album (as well as 3 from Spectral Mornings), but also highlighted his new album, with 5 songs from Wolflight for 2 sides to a magnificent show. The show featured here is from one of the very first dates of the tour and represented the best recording from the tour I could find. The tour went through the rest of 2015 and through most of 2016 as well. In 2017, Steve released his next solo album, The Night Siren. For the subsequent 2017 tour, Steve continued to do a mix of solo and Genesis songs, but now replacing the Wolflight tracks with the new Night Siren tracks, as well as once again adding some different Genesis tracks to the show. So, as packed as the 2015 show already is, I couldn't resist adding a couple bonus tracks from the 2017 tour, because he added a couple more Genesis rarely heard live tracks, 'One For the Vine' and the great 'Inside and Out', a Hackett composed song that was left off Wind and Wuthering and was relegated only to the EP Spot The Pigeon (1977). Hope you enjoy this wonderful show.

Following the Genesis Revisited album and Mini Japan tour, Steve went right back to work on more varied and diverse musical projects, producing in short order another classical guitar album, this time with Orchestral backing (A Midsummer Night's Dream, 1997), an acclaimed progressive album featuring dark but beautiful themes (Darktown, 1999), a collaboration with his brother John (flute) on a tribute album to classical composer Erik Satie (Sketches of Satie, 2000), and an album of songs originally composed in 1986, many intended for a second GTR album that never happened (Feedback 86, 2000). He continued his musical journeys with progressive, classical, rock, and classical albums (To Watch the Storms-2003, Metamorpheus-2005, Wild Orchids-2006, and Tribute-2008). Following some difficult times with messy divorces from both his wife and his business manager (including several lawsuits and the dissolution of his Camino Records), Steve continued his resurgent streak of acclaimed progressive rock albums with Out of the Tunnel's Mouth (2009) and Beyond the Shrouded Horizon (2011), followed by teaming up with Chris Squire (Yes) for a one album collaboration dubbed Squackett (A Life within A Day-2012). Next, Steve returned to reviving and re-creating more of his classic Genesis tracks in an even more extensive journey through the Genesis catalog for the double album Genesis Revisited II, in 2012, which was a big hit with progressive fans, resulting in his highest chart success since his early solo days. Once again, these were sensational new versions of Genesis classics, including the epic 'Supper's Ready' and great, but lesser-known songs such as 'Can-Utility and the Coastliners', 'The Chamber of 32 Doors', and 'Return of the Giant Hogweed'. For this collection, rather than offer distinctly different variations on the originals as he did in the First Genesis Revisited project, Steve chose to more closely re-create the original arrangements with some updates, and looking forward to live performances. Steve said his primary reason for re-doing more of these Genesis classics was because he really wanted to perform them live. So, starting in 2013, Steve began his extensive Genesis Revisited II World Tour, which continued all through 2014 as well, and was widely acclaimed, and resulted in the release of two different live albums and DVD concert collections (Genesis Revisited: Live at Hammersmith, 2013, and Genesis Revisited: Live at Royal Albert Hall, 2014). presented here is a great show from the U.S. leg, midway through the tour. I have added a bonus track of 'The Chamber of 32 Doors', a great song that was played at several dates early in the tour, but later dropped from the setlist. Throughout, Steve's great new versions of these songs are more than just nostalgia, but sensational new additions to his Progressive output.

Following his departure from GTR in late 1986, Steve Hackett went back to following his own musical directions (after GTR's brief brush with success and more mainstream rock). Steve's next album, Momentum (1988), was another full album of instrumental classical guitar pieces. Then Steve formed his own label, Camino Records, and released his first Live album, Time Lapse (1992). Next was Guitar Noir (1993), a mix of prog rock, classical, and atmospheric guitar with a darker tone. Next, Steve changed things up by releasing an entire album of Blues music, from traditional to his own brand of proggy-blues, Blues With A Feeling (1994). Then, for his next project, he went back to the music of Genesis, with a tribute to the music of his former band for Genesis Revisited (1996). The concept for this album came after talking with some fans, who assumed that he had turned his back on the music from his Genesis days (since he never played it in his concerts), and that he wanted nothing to do with it anymore. This bothered Steve, because he loved the music he had been a part of creating with Genesis in these days. So, he decided to do an album paying tribute to and inspired by some of the great old music from his Genesis days. He gathered other musicians with an affinity for such music, including former King Crimson, Yes, and Weather Report alums like John Wetton, Ian McDonald, Bill Bruford, and Chester Thompson to help out. The album consisted of several songs from his days in Genesis (from classics to more obscure gems), as well as some new ones inspired by that music, and one old previously unfinished song (by Peter Gabriel). The versions played on the album ranged from careful re-creations to new re-arrangements to fanciful re-imaginings, adding new chapters and variations to these classics. The album was very well-received by his fans. However, touring was another issue, as the schedules for most of his guest artists made it impossible for any extended tour. But, Steve was able to schedule 4 dates in Japan, with an all-star band of John Wetton, Ian McDonald, Julian Colbeck (Steve's current keyboard player, formerly with Zappa), and Chester Thompson. Those four shows were the only ones for that 1996 mini-tour, but what a show it was. The setlist mixed several of the Genesis Revisited tracks with various other of Steve's own songs, as well as some early King Crimson (For John and Ian) and even an Asia hit ('Heat of the Moment', but performed as an acoustic ballad). The First two nights (in Tokyo) were recorded and filmed, and were later released as both an album (The Tokyo Tapes, 1998) and a DVD. Certainly unique and memorable shows. The second two nights (in Osaka and Nagoya) became available as audience recordings. The PRRP (Progressive Rock Remasters Project) people remastered the available tapes and released them as PRRP 0042. I have included just the Osaka show here (because sound quality a bit better than Nagoya show, and the setlist was the same both nights), as it is representative. However, if there is interest in thwe Nagoya show (0042B), I can also post that.

Back to my ongoing Progressive Rock feature, and continuing with the career of guitarist Steve Hackett. We last left Steve in the early 1980's. Following the Cured tour (1981), Steve went back to the studio to create Highly Strung (1983), which was his last album for Charisma (record label), was more "Prog" than the previous album, but still with a sort of prog-pop blend. Steve left Charisma due to his desire to do more varied and a wider range of styles (and less mainstream) of music. For his first album on his new label (Lamborghini Records), Steve released Bay of Kings (1983), which was a full album of acoustic instrumental classical guitar compositions, and the type of album Charisma refused to release. But Steve was back to rock (as well as Brazilian and world music influences) for his next album, Til We Have Faces (1984).
Then, in 1985, Steve teamed up with another renowned prog guitarist also named Steve, Steve Howe, formerly of Yes and Asia, to form the new Supergroup GTR. Hackett has said that the idea for the band came one day when the two Steve's had lunch and began lamenting the fact that the guitar had been largely replaced in eighties rock music by synthesizers, drum machines, and sequencers, and that they should work together try to bring the guitar back into the spotlight. The announcement of this coming together of these two legendary virtuoso guitarists to form a new band was greeted with much excitement and enthusiasm among progressive rock fans. In addition to Hackett and Howe the band consisted of Max Bacon on vocals, Phil Spalding on bass, and Jonathan Mover on drums. The album, GTR, was released in 1986, sold very well, going gold and producing a top 20 single, 'When The Heart Rules the Mind'. However, although it is a solid album and contains much guitar virtuosity, many fans (particularly progressive rock fans) were disappointed with the album, its slick, more mainstream rock production, and the feeling that the songs were just not up with the best by either of the two dynamic stars. They wanted and expected more from this collaboration. And yes, the style is certainly more in line with Asia and other '80's rock than the classic progressive rock of their earlier days. But the tour of the band featuring these superstars performing together was something else. Both Howe and Hackett were able to fulfill a long-held dream of theirs to open their show with an acoustic guitar set, which they did every night, Hackett, then Howe, and then a new acoustic duo with the two of them together, before each GTR show. The band setlist consisted of the entire GTR album with the addition of a couple Genesis/Hackett and Yes tracks to rile up the crowd. I saw them on their only tour in 1986, and it was a great show, but the highlight for me (and many others) was the opportunity to see each of them play their opening acoustic sets and their acoustic duo, just shear joy watching them play. However, by the end of the tour, Hackett was ready to move on to other things, and promptly quit the band. Howe began work on recording a second album without Hackett, but abandoned the project (and the band) after several tracks were finished, but never released (Tracks from the aborted second album, titled Nerotrend, is available as a bootleg). Thus, GTR was another one and done band. Once again, Hackett left in order to pursue more varied and less mainstream forms of music.  Here is a full (including opening sets) show from the U.S. leg of the GTR tour. It's not a great recording, but it is the best (unreleased) one that I have from this tour. In 2015, a deluxe edition of the GTR album was released that included a full live show (GTR songs only, not opening acoustic sets) as a second disc. They also released a live disc from their King Biscuit Flower Hour broadcast show. Those are probably the best quality live recordings available, but there are numerous audience recordings of several other shows available as bootlegs.
