Live at Largo at the Coronet, Los Angeles, CA
Audience recording, good quality

While the Christmas spirit is still with us, here's another Christmas-themed show. A recent entry in the series of Aimee Mann Christmas shows. This one is from last Christmas (2019), when live shows and Christmas events like these were still possible. Aimee Mann and Ted Leo got together several years ago to from the rock duo The Both, and although the collaboration produced only one studio album (The Both-2014, which was very good), Mann and Leo have been performing together on and off since then, such as in her 2014 and 2015 Christmas shows, and again last year for her 2019 shows. As usual, this is a musical-variety show that mixes music (holiday and otherwise) with some banter, skits, and comedy bits, and feature several other guest artists in addition to Aimee and Ted. Guest artists at this year's show included Lisa Loeb, Paul Tompkins, and Josh Ritter, as well as some other surprises. Enjoy the Holidays with Aimee and Ted. Merry Christmas One and All.

Here's the return of Aimee and Ted's Christmas show, this time the 2015 edition (last year's show). Aimee and Ted joined together a few years ago to form The Both. Last year, I posted their 2014 Christmas Show, which marked the return of Aimee's Annual Christmas shows after missing several years. Aimee did not tour with a Christmas show for the current year (2016), so this is the most recent Christmas show available. These popular shows are a musical-variety show that mixes much music (holiday and otherwise) with some banter, skits, and comedy bits, and features several other artists in addition to Aimee and Ted. This year's guests included Liz Phair, Jonathan Coulton (who also was in the 2014 shows), and John Roderick. The theme in this year's show (or running gag, if you will) is a recurring bit about North pole politics and the ongoing Santa Elections. Song highlights include a new song from Aimee and Ted ('You're a Gift'), holiday favorites, artist standards, and some unique twists and variations on familiar songs. Overall, a very entertaining show. Hope you all have a very Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and all the best.

Aimee Mann & Ted Leo (& Friends) - 2014-12-09 - The Return of The Aimee Mann Christmas Show - Boston, MA

Aimee Mann & Ted Leo
(& featuring guests Jonathan Coulton, Susanna Hoffs, and Bill Janovitz)
2014-12-09
"The Return of the Aimee Mann Christmas Show"
The Wilbur Theatre, Boston, MA

Audience recording, good quality
Available in both Lossless (FLAC) and mp3 (320 kbps) versions

After hosting a series of what became annual Musical-Variety Christmas Shows (with guest stars, music, comedy, sketches, videos, etc.) that ran from 2006 to 2011, Aimee Mann took a few years off from the holiday affairs, but then in 2014 came back with Ted Leo, her recent partner in the musical collaboration The Both, to host another round of the popular Christmas Shows, which was dubbed, naturally, 'The Return of the Aimee Mann Christmas Show'. In this recent incarnation of the show (which always have some kind of theme), Aimee and Ted  play Rock n' Roll detectives, that is, they are musician crime solvers, they travel around the world, rockin' and rollin' and solvin' murders, but for this show, Aimee doesn't want to have to solve any murders, just have a fun, festive holiday show. But, of course, then they hear that the Backstage Santa has just been murdered. Aimee just wants to carry on with the show, but Ted thinks they need to solve the murder, setting the stage for some onstage mayhem. The songs, of course, are the main thing, though, and they play numerous Holiday standards, as well as a few of their own catalog songs, and are joined by guests Jonathan Coulton, Susanna Hoffs, and Bill Janovitz (Buffalo Tom), for a few songs each. And if you are not interested in the in-between song banter and antics, these are tracked separately so can be edited out, if desired (Some of those antics lose a lot without the visuals as we don't know what is happening onstage causing the audience laughter, etc.). But, overall, an entertaining show. This is from the Boston performance of the show. Also, Aimee and Ted have continued on in 2015 with a new version of the Christmas Show, which has just wrapped up its series of performances (unfortunately, I have not yet found any recorded versions of the 2015 show, which is said to have featured Liz Phair as a guest artist). Enjoy, and Happy Holidays to all.

Aimee Mann (w/Jon Brion) - 1996-08-24 - Largo, L.A., CA

Aimee Mann
(with Jon Brion and Dan McCarroll)
1996-08-24
Largo, Los Angeles, CA
"A Blonde and Two Grays"

Audience recording, average sound quality
mps @ 256 kbps

OK, so now we've heard what became of Jason Falkner after his brief stints with Jellyfish and The Grays, but what about Jon Brion, another very talented singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist who also was a part of both Jellyfish and The Grays? Well, after The Grays, Jon returned to doing some session work, and also started producing other artists, starting with his good friend Aimee Mann (whom he'd known since their 'Til Tuesday days, producing her first 3 albums, Whatever, I'm with Stupid, and Bachelor No.2), and then an ever-expanding list of artists (including Rufus Wainwright, Robyn Hitchcock, Elliott Smith, Fiona Apple, Rhett Miller, The Crystal Method, and in recent years, Spoon, Keane, Dido, Of Montreal, and even Kanye West). In the late '90's, he also began doing film scores and soundtracks, first for Paul Thomas Anderson (Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love), and then many others (including Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and I Heart Huckabees), and most recently ParaNorman and Judd Apatow's This is 40 (2012). As for performing, in 1996, he started a sort of residency at Largo, a club in L.A., performing every Friday night. His shows soon became legendary and sold-out every week, as he performed a mix of his own songs and a remarkable array of covers, usually from audience requests. He displays an encyclopedic knowledge of pop tunes (and standards and TV themes, etc.) and an uncanny ability to play and sing virtually any song called out. But more about Jon and his amazing solo shows and career later. As part of his regular shows at Largo, he began bringing by his musical friends and contacts as surprise guests, and also several of his friends began playing their own shows there. And that is what I have here today, A show from Aimee Mann at the Largo, in which she is ably backed-up by Jon Brion (on bass, guitar, piano, and backing vocals, as needed) and Dan McCarroll (also from The Grays) on drums. Thus, this show has been dubbed, A Blonde and Two Grays. Jon starts the show with one of his own songs, then Aimee takes over from there, featuring selections from her early albums, and even a preview of a couple that would not be released for a few more years ('Deathly', 'How Am I Different', on Bachelor). As I mentioned, I will have some more from Jon's solo shows coming up, but for now, here is Aimee Mann with a substantial portion of The Grays. The recording is not that great, but certainly listenable and worth checking out.

Aimee Mann - 2000 & 2003, Hamburg & Norfolk, VA

Aimee Mann
2000-04-09
Angie's Nightclub, Hamburg, Germany
2003-02-05
The Norva, Norfolk, VA

Soundboard and audience recordings, very good and good quality, respectively
mp3 @ 192 and 329 kbps

Here's another of my favorite female singer-songwriters from recent years. I first heard Aimee Mann around 1999 (on 'You Could Make a Killing') and was instantly taken with her style and sound. Then I heard her songs in the Paul Thomas Anderson Film Magnolia (1999) and had to hear more from her. That was followed closely by her Bachelor No.2 (2000) album, which (together with the Magnolia songs) is I think her very best work, and then the Lost in Space (2002) album, which is also very good. I just love her cynical, world-weary, yet also breathtakingly beautiful vocal style and inimitable songs. No one else quite sounds like or has a style like Aimee Mann (For a rather depressing, yet also strangely uplifting, Christmas album, check out her One More Drifter in the Snow-2006). So, featured here are a couple of live sets from what I consider her very best period, covering from
1999 to 2003. The 2000 Hamburg show features a great recording, but a too-short set (perhaps from a radio broadcast?), so I have added to that with a couple songs from 1999 and most of her full show at the Norva in 2003, which is not nearly as good a recording (audience), but features her full set and many different songs (several from Lost in Space). So, please, enjoy some Aimee Mann.
