OK, here's one more 10cc show. After the successful 1977 Deceptive Bends tour and release of the live album Live and Let Live, the group returned to the studio with the same band musicians as the tour, except that keyboardist Duncan MacKay replaced Tony O'Malley. The result was Bloody Tourists (1978), which produced another hit in the reggae-styled "Dreadlock Holiday" and also did well on the charts. But that success was short-lived, as in January 1979, the band suffered a major setback, in that Eric Stewart was involved in a serious car accident, damaging his ear and head, rendering him unable to go anywhere near music for more than 6 months. By the time the band was able to get back to working on their next album, their musical momentum had stalled, changes in the music business and musical tastes (punk and new wave had taken over rock) had reduced their popularity, and they would never again the achieve thelevel of their previous successes. The album, Look Hear? (1980), failed to produce any hits and stalled on the charts, and although solid, was the beginning of the end for the band. Stewart and Gouldman jettisoned the rest of the band (using session musicians) for the next album, Ten Out of Ten (1981), and also tried adding songs from guest Andrew Gold for the US version of the album, but it failed to attract much attention. Their next album, Window in the Jungle (1983), also was not successful, and the 1983 tour was the last from the band before going dormant and pursuing solo projects for the next several years. As mentioned in an earlier post, 10cc did get back together in 1991 for a new album (with limited involvement from Godley and Creme) and continuation through 1995, as well as subsequent touring bands fronted by Gouldman also billed as 10cc. Anyway, this 1980 tour was the last while the band was still flying relatively high. This is a very good recording from an FM broadcast. Although the setlist does feature many (6) lesser-known songs from the current Look Hear? album, it also features a nice selection of hits from previous albums as well, and it is a very fun show.

Here's more 10cc. As mentioned in the last post, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme left the band shortly after recording the album How Dare You? (1976), which is considered by many as their best album. But the growing distance between the two sets of songwriters (Stewart and Gouldman vs. Godley and Creme) regarding the music and vision for the band had become too much. Godley and Creme, always on the more experimental and avant-garde side, left to work on their own project, which became the  3-album concept opus Consequences (1977). Stewart and Gouldman, with the more pop song sensibilities, continued on as 10cc. But now without Godley and Creme, they were determined to show the world that the band could continue just as strong as previously (some critics had already dubbed the new version of the band 5cc). So, Stewart and Gouldman put everything they had into their next album, even playing all the instruments (except for Paul Burgess on drums). The new album, Deceptive Bends (1977) would be their most successful yet, with the hits "The Things We Do Love" "Good Morning Judge", and "People in Love", and much critical acclaim. Personally, this is my favorite 10cc album. But although they could record the album as a trio, additional musicians were needed to perform the songs live. So, for their Deceptive Bends tour, a "touring band" adding Rick Fenn, Tony O'Malley, and Stuart Tosh was established to cover all the parts and fill out the sound. The tour was a major success and resulted in the release of the first live album Live and Let Live (1977) which was recorded on this tour. The setlist focuses strongly on the new album, including 8 of the 9 songs from Deceptive Bends, along with favorites from the earlier albums. The concert posted here today is from later in the tour, from Japan. It is an audience recording, but overall has quite good sound, and again, there just are not very many unofficial live shows from 10cc available, so this is a nice treat.

Pre-FM Soundboard recording, excellent quality

Listening to the Graham Gouldman acoustic show naturally made me want to hear some 10cc, and their original, unique, sometimes bizarre and sometimes zany take on '70's pop music . There's not many high quality unofficial live recordings from the earlier days of the band, but this is probably the best around. It is a full-length show from their 1975 American Tour, in support of their breakthrough album, The Original Soundtrack (1975), their third official LP. Although the band achieved earlier success in the UK with their first two albums, 10cc (1973) and Sheet Music (1974), it wasn't until Original Soundtrack and their hit, 'I'm Not in Love' that they scored on the US charts. Thus, the 1975 tour was their first tour as headlining act in the US. The set featured songs from their two most recent albums, as well as a preview of a song ('Art For Art's Sake') from their next album, How Dare You (1976), which would be the last album that included original members Godley and Creme. Enjoy this 1975 look at 10cc.

Note: This show has been widely distributed with the date as November 11, 1975, but this is not correct. Verification by tour schedules and various 10cc fan sites shows that the correct date is November 26. (The band started their West Coast shows on 11/13 in Vancouver, and over the next 2 weeks made their way down the coast, through Washington, Oregon, and Northern CA, before their Southern CA date in Santa Monica on the 26th). See pic of backstage pass at bottom of post for date verification.
