Tom Petty, Mudcrutch - Mudcrutch and Solo Petty LP Outtakes, 1972-1977

Tom Petty, Mudcrutch
Mudcrutch Demos and Solo Petty LP Outtakes
circa 1972-1977

Recordings from various sources, fair to very good quality
Available in both lossless (FLAC) and mp3 (320 kbps) versions

In response to a recent request, I dug out this collection of demos and outtakes from the early days of Mudcrutch and Tom Petty's initial aborted solo project. And since this contains some very interesting relics from the past in the careers of the revived Mudcrutch band and Petty himself, I decided to go ahead and post it here for all to enjoy. As most probably know now, Mudcrutch was Petty's band in Gainesville, FL, before the days of The Heartbreakers (although core members Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench were in both bands). After several years making the rounds in central Florida, in 1974, they packed up their van, and armed with a demo tape, headed out West to find fame, fortune, and a recording contract. They made it as far as Tulsa (and ultimately L.A.), where they hooked up with Leon Russel's Shelter Records, and began recording some tracks for an eventual album. Other members of the band around that time included Danny Roberts (guitar, bass, backing vocals) and then Charlie Souza (bass). However, things didn't work out, the album never happened (the only released product from that association was an unsuccessful single, 'Depot Street'), and by 1975, the band was dropped and quickly split up. However, Shelter was still interested in Petty by himself to make a solo album, which he started to work on, but it just wasn't coming together without a solid band behind him. On a trip back home to Gainesville, Petty checked out the new band Campbell and Tench was putting together, and that group just felt right to Petty, and they became The Heartbreakers and Petty's permanent band. So, the solo album was dropped and Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers began fresh. So, this collection contains remnants from the original Mudcrutch Demo tape (circa 1973-1974) that the boys brought with them on their journey West, some tracks from their recording sessions at Shelter Church Studios (including a rare Danny Roberts vocal track), as well as some songs from Petty's solo album sessions (1975). However, not all the songs presented here are actually from that period (10 of the 15 tracks are), as there are also several songs that come from The Heartbreakers sessions in and around the album You're Gonna Get It, which are from around 1977-1978. So, although not all Mudcrutch related stuff (some Heartbreakers, too), this is a very interesting set of songs that for the most part never were developed or followed up on any further. Recording quality varies greatly, but most of the tracks have surprisingly good sound. Certainly a must for any fan of Tom Petty, Mudcrutch, and the Heartbreakers.

Steely Dan - The Lost Gaucho and Outtakes (corrected and enhanced version) - 1979

Steely Dan
The Lost Gaucho and Outtakes
(NEW upgraded version - phase-corrected and cleaned-up)
~1979
Studio outtakes, good to excellent sound quality

For this version, Phase-correction and audio touch-ups and clean-up work provided by Anthony Ochoa for the BB Chronicles

Now available in lossless (FLAC) and mp3 (320 kbps) versions!

My previous post of Steely Dan's Lost Gaucho and Outtakes has consistently been one of the most popular posts ever here at the 'Chronicles'. So naturally, as I was preparing many posts for upgrading (to lossless and/or improved, upgraded quality where possible) a month or so ago, and since previously these were posted only as mp3 files, I planned on including the Lost Gaucho in this upgrade group. Coincidentally, around this same time, I was contacted by an alert blog reader who had recently downloaded the files from here, and who happened to be an audio engineer, and he noticed that for the entire CD1 of the post, the left and right channels were completely (180 degree) out of phase with each other, which resulted in cancellation and loss of sound from some frequencies (particularly low end), and an overall loss of fidelity in the recordings. When I checked it out, he was absolutely right, and as I checked around for other (and Lossless) sources, I found that all the available sources I could find also had the same out-of-phase problem, so it appeared that these were the versions that have been around the trading circles for years. Fortunately, correcting this type of phase issue is quite simple to do, and it is surprising that it has not been fixed before now. Anyway, my new audio engineer blog friend, Anthony Ochoa, was interested in not only fixing the phase problem, but also going through the recordings and doing some EQ and clean-up work on them to bring them up to a higher sound quality. So, that is what he did, and his resulting work on CD1 (The Lost Gaucho) has restored these files to a much fuller, richer sound, almost to a commercial quality level. Unfortunately, the many sound problems on the other batch of outtakes on CD2 were not so easily fixed, as Anthony told me, the "warbling & mushy" sound was probably due to a transfer from "a lousy cassette tape that was poorly calibrated and poorly maintained, as was the deck used to play it back" resulting in some sound problems that can't be fixed. Nonetheless, Anthony also did go through the lesser quality CD2 files and performed some "clean-up work" on them to fix some gaps, fades, and erroneous noise.  Thus, CD1 now has greatly enhanced sound quality, while CD2 only has some minor enhancements, but nonetheless this is an overall upgraded and improved package, and is also now available in lossless as well as mp3. Generally, for my recent upgrades, I have not made new posts, just updated the old one, but for this exciting new enhanced and upgraded version, I thought a new post was warranted. Thanks to Anthony for taking time to make these improvements and make this available. For more info and background on the original recordings and sessions, see the original post here. Note: I am leaving the original post (and link) intact, so that those interested in the unaltered files can still get those.

Barenaked Ladies - Outtakes & Bonus Tracks (1996-2013) (Updated)

Barenaked Ladies
Outtakes & bonus tracks (1996-2013)

Studio outtakes & bonus tracks, excellent quality
mp3 @ 320k
Re-up of previously available compilation, plus now upgraded to include 3 bonus tracks from Grinning Streak (2013).

Recently I was reminded by a reader that my 2010 post containing these outtakes from the Barenaked Ladies had never been re-upped after the 'great megaupload fiasco of 2012' (at least that what I'm calling it). And I was surprised to find that he was quite right: the old useless megaupload link was still there on my web blog page. Although I had thought I had fixed all of those long ago and updated with new links, here was one I had missed after all this time. As I looked into it some more, I then realized that initially when I was re-uploading and updating all these links, I had misplaced these particular files, they were not backed-up to where they were supposed to be in my mess of a 'system' of music file organization. So, at the time I skipped over them, until I could find them again. Well then, of course, after awhile I forgot all about them and just never got tracked them down and got this updated. So now, spurred back into action, I located the missing files (oh yeah, so That's where they were!), and decided that now, since BNL have recently put out a new album, and there were also additional bonus tracks associated with that one, that I certainly should add in the new tracks as well. So, here you have it, the original outtake collection, with the addition of the new bonus tracks from Grinning Streak also included. So, if you hadn't downloaded this previously, now there is even more reason to do it now, and if you had been waiting for me to finally get this back up, sorry, but now the wait is over. Enjoy!  I do believe this was the last of the old dead links still hanging around, but if you happen to find any others, let me know.

Steely Dan - The Lost Gaucho and Outtakes

Steely Dan
The Lost Gaucho and Outtakes

Studio outtakes, very good quality
mp3 @ 320

For many years, this was considered the holy grail of Steely Dan bootlegs, as it features a complete alternative Gaucho album including several unreleased songs from the Gaucho sessions that were not included on the eventual album. As is known by most SD fans, Becker and Fagen had to endure various misfortunes during the long and grueling process of the making of Gaucho, which caused numerous delays in its release. Becker was hit by a car, one of their favorite new tracks "The Second Arrangement" was accidentally erased by an assistant recording engineer, and there was a dispute over which record company had the rights to their forthcoming album. MCA won the contract dispute (although Fagen and Becker had already signed to a new label, WB) but then decided to increase the album's list price to one dollar more than all other albums at that time. Donald and Walter tried unsuccessfully to fight the price increase. Through all this, Fagen and Becker grew more and more disenchanted, and eventually scrapped much of what had been recorded previously, including several entire songs. Gaucho was eventually released in November, 1980. But the ordeal, poitics, and aftermath of the making and remaking of Gaucho may have lead to Donald & Walter's decision to call it quits after this album. Nonetheless, these outtakes represent all that is left from these sessions and the last unreleased songs from Steely Dan.
This outtake collection, consists of the 'Lost' Gaucho album (CD1), which is a complete album vastly different to what was released, as well as a collection of other miscellaneous outtakes, demos, and alternate versions from these sessions (CD2). Of the 8 songs included on the 'lost' edition, only three of these were tracks that appeared on the official album, in somewhat different form. 'Were You Blind That Day' was an early rendition of a song with different lyrics that finally appeared as 'Third World Man' on the released Gaucho. 'Time Out Of Mind' on the lost version is simpler, missing the embellishments added on the Gaucho version. And the title track here is just an instrumental. The rest of the tracks are original unreleased Steely Dan songs prepared for Gaucho, but not used. These include 'Kind Spirit', 'The Bear', 'The Second Arrangement', 'Talkin’ About My Home' and 'Kulee Baba', and have never been released in any form. Earlier versions of these songs circulated somewhat in poorer quality (but were difficult to find) until around 2002 when high quality copies of the sessions emerged. Although these sessions have become fairly widely availble in the last few years, I also wanted to include them here as well, for completeness.

Barenaked Ladies - Outtakes (1996-2010)

Barenaked Ladies
Outtakes & bonus tracks (1996-2010)
Studio outtakes, excellent quality
mp3 @ 320k
New! Now upgraded to include 3 bonus tracks from Grinning Streak (2013)!

Here is a great collection of studio session outtakes from the Barenaked Ladies that I just got my hands on. This covers outtakes from 1996-2010 (from Born On A Pirate Ship right up through their newest (2010) album, All in Good Time), and includes several previously unreleased songs that were left of their respective albums, in addition to several acoustic performances of some of the album tracks. Of particular note are the four new songs from the All in Good Time sessions that did not make it onto that album (ironically including the potential title cut). Great to hear these additional BNL songs.

BTW, for those who have not yet heard it, and are wondering about the new album, All In Good Time (their first as a foursome after the departure of songwriter/vocalist Steven Page), here's my take: It's a good, solid album, with strong songwriting, impeccable production, and fine vocals and harmonies. Although not quite among the group's very best work, it certainly is not weak either, containing several memorable songs. My biggest complaint with it, however, is that the guys are far too serious on it, that is, it's not a 'fun' album, containing only one song that could be considered fun (the standout track, 'Four Seconds', easily the best song --and instant classic BNL tune). And for a band that has made it's reputation on fun, goofy songs (or at least clever, witty lyrics), it's entirely too serious (That, and a bit too much sniping at Page for leaving). Otherwise, it's quite solid and very enjoyable. Anyway, hope you enjoy these fine outtakes from over the past several years.
