Peter Gabriel - 2014-11-28 - LG Arena, Birmingham, UK - So Back to Front Tour

Peter Gabriel
2014-11-28
LG Arena
Birmingham, UK
Audience recording (Funbags 039), very good quality
Available in both Lossless (FLAC) and Mp3 (320kbps) versions

Staying with the remarkable Peter Gabriel, and now moving up to the 2010's, here is a show from the Back to Front Tour, which included a live version of the complete So (1986) album, in addition to a great selection of songs from throughout his catalog. Another wonderful show from these later years. This show marks the conclusion of my look back at Peter Gabriel's live shows through the decades, as I have now featured a show from each of the six (SIX!) decades (1970's to 2020's) that Peter has been performing live, and which culminated with his sensational 2023 i/o tour last year (show featured here). And he has been remarkable throughout all these decades. Don't know if that 2023 tour will mark the end of his touring days or not, but regardless, it was a monumental tour and year for Gabriel, ending with the release of the full i/o/album, which is one of his very best, and for me, the best album of 2023. And despite Gabriel being much older now than those early days back in the 70's, he still gives a great show and is making great music all these years later.  Check out this 2014 show, as well as all the previous ones featured, if you haven't already.

Here's more from Peter Gabriel, as we move on through the decades. here's a show from 2002, on the Growing Up Tour, in support of his new album at the time, Up (2002). This is a great audience recording from the Washington DC show, featuring several new songs from the current album, as well as many of the older and by now classic songs. And once again, another version of his dynamite backing band. Another great show from this master vocalist. musician, and performer.

Peter Gabriel - 1993-11-06 - Deutschlandhalle, Berlin, Germany - Secret World Tour

Secret World Tour
Soundboard Recording ("Human Wave Wall" - Dr.Jones), Excellent quality
Available in both Lossless (FLAC) anf Mp3 (320 kbps) versions

As we continue with this look at Peter Gabriel live shows, and move up into the 1990's now. Here is a fantastic recording of a great 1993 show from the Secret World Tour, which was in support of his 1992 album, Us, and was utterly amazing. This is from a Berlin Germany show, and very close to the time that the show was recorded and releases as Peter's Secret World Live album (1994). That recording was from a couple of shows in Italy several days after this one. But this recording is just as good, and one of the very best from this tour. It sounds sensational. This show has a very similar setlist as the Secret World Live album, but with a couple of additional songs. In this show, we lose Red Rain (unfortunately), but gain Games Without Frontiers, San Jacinto, and Schanpschuss (which is the German language version of Family Snapshot). So, even if you already have Secret World Live (which is a great live album), there are some additional gems in this show.  A great setlist of songs, featuring many from Us and So, and Peter's sensational band make for a stunning show.

Peter Gabriel - 1986 and 1988 Amnesty International Shows (1986-06-15 NJ and 1988-09-27 Tokyo)

Here's more Peter Gabriel. Now we're moving up to the 1980's, following the release of his most successful album, So, and shows he did in conjunction with Amnesty International. First, in 1986, as part of the Conspiracy of Hope series of shows, which featured Peter in addition to several other big name stars, including U2, Sting, Bryan Adams, Lou Reed, Joan Baez, and the Neville Brothers. Then, in 1988 there was the Human Rights Now! tour, also on behalf of Amnesty International, and was was more extensive, going worldwide, covering 30 shows on 5 different continents in September and October, 1988. In addition to Gabriel, those shows included performances by Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Tracy Chapman, and Youssou N'Dour, as well as local acts from each locality. Only the peter gabriel portion of the shows are featured here.

Peter Gabriel - 1978-09-30 & 10-01 - The Roxy, West Hollywood, CA

Roxy, West Hollywood, CA
[Mike Millard first generation cassettes via JEMS, 2CD]
The Lost and Found Mike the MICrophone Tapes Vol 14.
Live at The Roxy; West Hollywood, CA. September 30-October 1, 1978 (compilation from early and late sets).
Audience recording, very good quality
mp3 @ 320 kbps

I have been really enjoying Peter Gabriel's latest album, i/o, which for me, was the best album of 2023, by far. Definitely check it out if you have not already. I previously posted a show from Gabriel's most recent concert tour (i/o tour), which contained many songs from the new album. So, today, I thought I would go back to the early days of Gabriel's solo career and post a show from the late '70's. So, this is a show from 1978, featuring songs from Peter's first 2 solo albums, and a dynamite band (Tony Levin Jerry Marotta, Larry Fast, Sid McGinnis). Actually, this is a compilation of performances from 2 nights (4 sets) at the Roxy in West Hollywood, CA USA, compiling the best recordings from those 2 nights, as taped and selected by master taper, Mike Millard. Thus, we get a slightly longer, enhanced version of the show, as not all these songs were played at each show, but here we get them all. Very interesting to go back to hear Gabriel at this stage of his career and these earlier album shows, prior to the bulk of his solo artist success. A wonderful trip back to those earlier days of this magnificent artist, who is still going strong more than 45 years after these shows. For now, I'm just posting the mp3 version of the show (due to filesize sharing site issues), but if there is interest, I can also post the Lossless version.

Peter Gabriel - 2023-05-24 - Stade Pierre Mauroy, Villaneuve d'Asq, France - i/o tour

Wednesday 24th May 2023
Stade Pierre Mauroy, Villeneuve d'Ascq, France
Audience recording (TakerRecords), very good sound quality
Available in both Lossless (FLAC) and Mp3 (320 kbps) versions

Last month I posted a recent show from legendary progressive rock vocalist and icon Jon Anderson from his current tour, and this month I have a great show from another legendary progressive rock vocalist and icon Peter Gabriel from his current i/o Tour, which features 11 songs from his upcoming new album, i/o. Peter has been slowly releasing new songs this year, with one song coming out on each full moon. Thus, so far this year, 6 of the new songs have been released, but on this tour he plays 11 of the new songs, so several more are featured here. This is a big deal, because it has been over 20 years since Peter's last new album of original songs (Up, 2002). Already, the album is stacking up as one of the year's best, even before it is released. In addition, he plays several favorites from his previous albums on this tour, including several from So (his biggest-selling album), and numerous crowd favorites. As usual, he has a top-notch 8-piece band backing him, and the show is just sensational. There have been several shows with decent audio recordings, and a few that also have video (and are available to view on YouTube), and if you are a fan, I would suggest checking out some of the videos of the show, as they are great as well.  Great songs and a great performance from this master of melodic progressive rock.

Sting & Peter Gabriel - 2016-06-26 - Camden, NJ

Sting & Peter Gabriel
BB&T Pavilion, Camden, NJ
June 26, 2016
Audience Recording, Good Quality

Available in both Lossless (FLAC) and mp3 (320 kbps) versions
Recording location: Section 104, row M.
Recorded by: Tapehead2

Here's another current collaborative tour, featuring two solo rock icons playing some of their greatest hits together, Sting & Peter Gabriel. And what makes this collaborative show (tour) something more special than the usual double headliner show (each performer does their own set, then maybe perform together for a few songs at the end) is that this is a truly collaborative show throughout with both performers (and their bands) playing together on each others songs through the entire concert. Most of the time this means singing background or harmony vocals on each others songs, but also several songs featuring co-lead vocals, and even some where the other artist takes the lead instead the original vocalist, sometimes even completely re-arranging the song into their own style. For example, Gabriel does a decidedly different version of  Sting's 'If You Love Somebody Set Them Free', giving it a complete Gabriel-ized makeover, with very interesting results. Sting takes lead on Gabriel's Shock the Monkey and a snippet of Dancing with the Moonlight King, among others, and the two exchange vocals and harmonies on a number of songs. The two bands also merge and interact on several songs as well, resulting in some new twists on the old classics, and a very interesting show. I believe the tour is continuing for a couple more weeks, so if it comes your way, be sure to check it out. If it missed your area, at least you can check out a representative show here to hear this unique combination of talents and great songs.

Genesis - 1982-09-29 - Reunion Rehearsal - London (Upgrade)

Genesis
"All The Help I Can Get"
September 29, 1982
Hammersmith Odeon, London, UK
(Upgraded quality version - Repost)

Rehearsal for Genesis Reunion Concert at Milton Keynes, Oct. 2, 1982

Soundboard recording, Good quality
New! Upgraded quality recordings. Now available in Lossless (FLAC) and higher quality Mp3 (320 kbps). Previously offered version was only 192 k.

While I am updating all the old, dead links, I've taken this opportunity to upgrade the quality of some of them most in need of it. So, here is a re-post of a unique Genesis performance that was first posted here way back in 2008. This, of course, is the soundboard recording from the only rehearsal session prior to the one-off 1982 Genesis Reunion Concert at Milton Keynes, UK on 10-02-1982. For those that don't know, this was an impromptu 'one-time-only' reunion show, in which Gabriel got together with his former bandmates, presumably to help get Peter out of debt after getting the WOMAD festival established earlier that year. The performance from that memorable concert event is available on various bootlegs (as 'The Lamb Woke Up Again', 'Six of the Best', 'Live from Milton Keynes'), of which the best available recorded version has also long been made available (in best quality) on this blog here previously. As others have commented previously, the performance from that show is a bit shaky in spots (due to lack of preparation time and rehearsal), but it remains the only time Gabriel has re-joined the band onstage to date, certainly a one-of-a-kind event. Unfortunately, all the known recordings from this show are fairly mediocre audience recordings, certainly worth having, but not the best quality. But here is a somewhat better quality recording of the rehearsal session (9-29-82) prior to the concert.
I commented previously regarding the uniqueness, worth, and quality of this session and recording, but suffice it to say that it certainly is a 'must-have' for fans of the band, and particularly for those that prefer the days when Gabriel was present.
And now, for the first time, I have obtained these files in higher quality versions than was available previously. Normally when I provide an upgrade such as this, I just update the original post and don't bother re-posting it as a 'new' entry. However, I thought the new availability of these upgraded versions deserved a post of their own to make everyone aware. So, if you had not obtained this show previously, by all means do so now, and even if you previously obtained this from here or elsewhere @ 192k, then it still is well-worth it to download these upgraded quality files for this unique rehearsal event in Genesis history.

For more details and info regarding the session and performance, see original post info here

PRRP-SAE-004 - 'A Classic Broadcast Revisited '

FM Broadcast recording (remastered), very good quality
Available in both Lossless (FLAC) and mp3 (320 kbps) versions

Here's another classic Genesis bootleg, this one generally considered to be the best available recording from the Selling England By The Pound Tour (1974). Thus, this is one of my favorite Genesis shows, since this was my favorite tour and featured so many of my favorite Genesis songs, including 'Watcher of the Skies', 'Cinema Show', 'I Know What I Like', 'Firth of Fifth', and the original full live epic odyssey of 'Supper's Ready' (If only they would have included the sensational but rarely played 'Can Utility and the Coastliners'). Anyway, here it is, another essential show from the classic progressive period and lineup of Genesis, truly wonderful, for those that don't already have this live masterpiece.

Genesis - 1970-1972 - The Complete BBC Sessions

Genesis
The Complete BBC Sessions
1970-1972

FM Broadcast Recordings, very good quality
available in both Lossless (FLAC) and mp3 (320 kbps) versions

Previously, I have posted many fine Genesis bootleg recordings, but did not post some of the very best ones because they were readily available from other sites. But now, as stated previously, with the demise of so many music blogs and filesharing sites, they may not be so readily available. So, now I will present a couple more of the classic Genesis recordings as part of our continuing look at all-time classic boots. Although many recordings exist of live early Genesis (1970-1972), most available are of pretty poor quality. But this premier compilation of BBC recordings from those early years represents the very best quality live recordings from that time, are high quality FM and Pre-FM recordings, and feature a premier assortment of songs (including the rarely heard epic 'Twilight Alehouse') and performances from those early days of the group. Thus, this really is the best (and probably only) boot from those early days that you really need (and you do need it). So, again, for those that don't already have it, here's some early Genesis in their BBC sessions.

Genesis - 1974-05-06 - New York (PRRPGS-019)

1974-05-06

PRRP-GS-019 - 'The Very Last Pound'
Remastered Audience recording, very good quality
Lossless (FLAC) files

Here is the first Genesis show to be featured here from the excellent PRRP (Progressive Rock Remasters Project) Genesis Series (and ones that are generally not available from any other blog!), titled 'The Very Last Pound', as this was the very last show of the Selling England By The Pound Tour in 1974. This was the 3rd and last show at the Academy of Music in NY. The first show is featured in a very good and widely available boot (one version of which is another PRRP release, PRRPGS-013, which can be obtained at Qualitybootz and other places). This one, however, is the much lesser heard last show, which is also very good. It has the same setlist as the first show, with the exception of 'More Fool Me' replaced 'Horizions' from that set. This was one of my favorite Genesis tours, probably because Selling England and Foxtrot are my favorite Genesis albums, and this tour specifically featured those albums. One other note: this tour also featured the full version of 'Firth of Fifth', with the extended keyboard introduction (my favorite part), which was not included in the later versions of this song on subsequent tours (apparently Tony had some difficulty playing the part live, so they cut it out). Which makes these earlier versions all the more valuable. So, here's to a great Genesis show from 1974.

Here, finally, is the best version available of this historic one-time concert event. For those that don't know, this is the reunion concert that took place in 1982 to help Peter get out of debt after financing the W.O.M.A.D. concert event held earlier that year. His former bandmates came to his aid and we are left with this performance. Although the band did not have a lot of time to practice before the concert and it is noticeable in some parts, this remains a unique and historic concert event. It is still the only concert performance with all members from the classic early '70's lineup present. Unfortunately, the available recordings are not the greatest quality (generally mediocre, partial audience recordings). However, this is by far the best available recorded document of the event. TM productions has consistently produced the best quality Genesis bootlegs, and they have thoroughly cleaned up and remastered the available tapes from this concert, resulting in a very good quality recording. I have 3 other recorded versions of this concert, and this is, by far, the best version available. I had been looking for this one for quite awhile. Thanks to Dave at Quality Boots for recently making this available.

Well, here it is, the recently-surfaced soundboard recording from the only rehearsal session prior to the one-off 1982 Genesis Reunion Concert at Milton Keynes, UK on 10-02-1982. For those that don't know, this was an impromptu 'one-time-only' reunion show, in which Gabriel got together with his former bandmates, presumably to help get Peter out of debt after getting the WOMAD festival established earlier that year. The performance from that memorable concert event is available on various bootlegs (as 'The Lamb Woke Up Again', 'Six of the Best', 'Live from Milton Keynes'), some available elsewhere on this forum. As many have commented, the performance from that show is a bit shaky in spots (due to lack of preparation time and rehearsal), but it remains the only time Gabriel has re-joined the band onstage to date, certainly a one-of-a-kind event. Unfortunately, all the known recordings from this show are fairly mediocre audience recordings, certainly worth having, but not the best quality. So, now here comes some higher quality tapes of the rehearsal session (9-29-82) prior to the concert. Now we have a better document of this unique time and concert experience.

I've been trying to get hold of these ever since I first heard about them. The assessment: Yes, these are a marvelous documentation of this event, and the sound quality is much better than the tapes of the actual concert I've heard. It is fascinating to hear this behind the scenes glimpse at them running through these songs for the first time in many years. However, as with the concert itself, these are far from their best performances, and perhaps because this IS just a rehearsal, some of the performances are a bit lackluster. Gabriel, in particular, is notably rusty and somewhat lost in some of the older songs that he hadn't performed in years ('Supper's Ready', 'Musical Box', and 'The Knife'). The sound quality also is not as good as one might hope, not as crisp, clean, or clear as the best soundboards, uneven mix, and the volume seems to fade in and out somewhat sporadically. Not that I'm complaining, as I am thrilled to get the chance to hear these sessions after all these years. Make no mistake, despite the flaws (and maybe even partly because of them), these tapes are a rare find and a 'must-have' for any serious Genesis or Gabriel fan. A big thank you to whoever was responsible for bringing these tapes to the public.

BTW, for whatever reason, apparently Steve Hackett was not part of the reunion plans, and does not appear at this rehearsal session. However, Steve did show up at the actual concert, and joined the rest of the band for the encore ('The Knife').
