Here's another great Genesis show from Yesteryear, and another show from taper Mike Millard's Lost and Found Master Collection, and also a show that had not been previously available until Mike's original recordings were uncovered a few years ago. This tour, of course, was their first without guitarist extraordnaire Steve Hackett. So, at this point the band consisted of just the trio of Phil Collins, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford. For the tour, which was in support of their latest album, And Then There Were Three, which makes an obvious reference to the band personnel changes, they are joined by the able support of guitarist Darryl Stuermer and ace drummer Chester Thompson. Once again, they had a lot to prove, after losing another key member of the band. But once again, they put on a great concert and show. I saw them on this tour, and although I was really disappointed not to get to see Steve with the band, it was a great show nonetheless, featuring songs from throughout their catalog.

OK, I'm back with some more classic progressive rock shows. Over the past year or so I've featured several shows from the Mike Millard Masters collection (high quality audience recordings taped by Mike Millard), and today I have another gem from that series, a classic Genesis show from 1976. The 1976 tour was their first without former lead singer Peter Gabriel (who left the band the previous year) and thus the first with Phil Collins as frontman, and that featured music from their first Gabriel-less new album Trick of the Tail. And proving to their critics and fans that not only could they carry on, but thrive as well in their new incarnation, was vitally important to the band. For this tour they brought along legendary drummer Bill Bruford (Yes, King Crimson), the only time he played with Genesis, so Phil could spend most of his time up front of the band. And of course, both the album and tour was a raging success. Borrowing Bruford was a one-time only a temporary thing. For subsequent tours, the also legendary Chester Thompson (Zappa, Weather Report) toured with them on drums. So, this was the only chance to see and hear Bruford with Genesis. And it was a great show, featuring a mix of earlier songs (with Collins on lead vocals for the first time) and the new songs from Trick of the Tail (which were woven together perfectly), showed that Phil could handle the task beautifully. Anyway, here is a great shoe from that tour.

Tracklist:
01 Dance On A Volcano
02 The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
03 Fly On A Windshield

Last week I posted what has been called the Last Genesis Concert, capping a more than 50-year career for this legendary band. But I also noted that the current version of the band is a far cry from the peak or 'classic' years of the band. So, today, I have a great show from those more prime years for the band. This is a show from 1977 and a recording that has only recently been 'found' (as thought to have been lost) from the Mike Millard (Mike the MICrophone) master tape series. This tour 1977 tour, of course is what was used to produce the great Seconds Out Live album. But Seconds Out did not include all the songs played at these shows. So here is another full concert from that tour, in a great recording from Millard. Actually, this recording did not include the encore of 'Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' and the closing section of 'The Musical Box', so those have been added from the San Francisco concert 2 days earlier (from the very good PRRP-GS-011 recording). So, the whole concert is here. Although Peter Gabriel was no longer in the band at this point, Steve Hackett still was, and this 1977 tour is considered among the very best Genesis shows ever. So, enjoy this piece of Genesis history and the band still in their glory days.

Genesis - 2022-03-26 - O2 Arena - London, UK - The Last Genesis Concert

Genesis

March 26 2022
02 Arena, London, UK
Last Domino Tour - The Last Genesis Concert
Audience (EBR) recording, Good quality                            Available in both Lossless (FLAC) and Mp3 (320 kbps) versions

Last week, legendary Prog/pop/rock band Genesis (or at least what remains of Genesis) wrapped up their Last Domino? Tour at the O2 Arena in London on March 26, 2022, with what has been called the last ever concert performance by Genesis. Whether or not this truly is the final concert of some form of Genesis remains to be seen, but considering the declining health of lead singer Phil Collins (who already can no longer play the drums), it may very well be the end. And what a sad and bittersweet end that it is. Genesis, of course, was one of the all-time great progressive rock bands of the 1970's, but after departures of vocalist Peter Gabriel and guitarist Steve Hackett and facing changes in the commercial music landscape in the 1980's, the band morphed into a very successful pop/rock band through the 1990's. A reunion tour in 2007 brought the remaining core players, Phil Collins, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford back for another brief go-round, and then declining health of Collins precluded any further band activities. That  is, up until this Last Domino? Tour was announced , originally scheduled for 2020, but postponed until late 2021 and early 2022 due to the pandemic. Thus giving fans of the band one last opportunity to see them in concert, and I'm sure those that did see them on this tour were happy to be able to do so. But this current version of the band is still a pale imitation of the former greatness of this legendary band. Although Collins makes a bold attempt, confined to sit throughout the show, his voice is noticeably weak and frail. And the setlist, unfortunately, focuses primarily on the hits, with the bulk of the songs coming from their post-1980 output, and even the 'classic' era 1970's songs that are included are mostly inserted as snippets or incomplete forms wedged into longer medleys. But here it is, for history's sake, if nothing else, the final live concert from Genesis. It is perhaps fitting (or ironic) that Peter Gabriel was actually there for this show, but sitting in the audience, rather than as a part of the band, as it appears that there is no longer a place for him in this band, or that he would have much interest in joining in. But Collins, Banks, and Rutherford are all great musicians that have made much great music over the years, and this is a fine show for what it is, but yes, it is a somewaht sad end to a great band.

Jazz fusion-progressive rock band Brand X picked up where the original Mahavishnu Orchestra left off and took the jazz-rock branch of the progressive rock movement to a whole new level. More jazz, more rock, and more progressiveness. Brand X was formed in 1975 by guitarist John Goodsall, bassist Percy Jones, and keyboardist Robin Lumley. Genesis drummer Phil Collins was invited to join in on some early band rehearsals, and this core group eventually recorded the first Brand X album, Unorthodox Behavior (1976). Collins played with the band whenever he was not busy with Genesis commitments. For their next album, Moroccan Roll (1977), percussionist Morris Pert was added to the lineup. But with Collins busy with his own Genesis tour, another drummer had to be recruited for the band's upcoming 1977 North American tour, and jazz drummer Kenwood Dennard was brought in (and a very capable replacement he was). A Live album from the 1977 tour was released, Livestock (1977). The band endured lineup changes for the next album, Masques (1978), with Collins unavailable, and Lumley and Pert leaving, but Collins returned for the next album, Product (1979). Two more albums were released in the subsequent years (which included Collins and Lumley on some tracks), Do They Hurt? (1980) and Is There Anything About? (1982), however, these consisted primarily of outtakes from the Product sessions, and the band had essentially disbanded in 1980 after their world tour. Goodsall and Jones later revived the band in 1992 (although Goodsall and Jones were the only members from previous incarnations) for a couple of new albums, but again disbanded by 1997. But following a 2016 reunion (including Goodsall, Jones, Lumley, and Dennard), the band was re-formed for additional touring and is still active. Here is a show (2 sets) from their heyday in 1977 (although does not include Collins, as he was touring with Genesis). Great 1970's jazz-rock fusion/progressive rock.
