Reknowned Multi-instrumentalist Garth Hudson (of The Band) (1937-2025) R.I.P.

 

Legendary Canadian Multi-instrumentalist (piano, organ, sax, accordion, etc.) Garth Hudson died recently (Jan. 21, 2025) at a nursing home in Woodstock, NY. He was 87 years old. Garth was best-known as original member and keyboard player (as well as occasional sax and accordion) for The Band. He was the last surviving member of that legendary influential group, first formed in 1957 as The Hawks and was at first the backing band for Ronnie Hawkins through the mid-60's. They gained much recognition when they backed Bob Dylan on his 1966 electric tour, and became known as The Band from then on. Their 1st album as The Band was Music From the Big Pink (1968), followed by The Band (1970), both released to great critical and commercial success. I've previously posted many shows and commentaries demonstrating the importance of The Band in rock history.

Hudson was integral to The Band's sound and style, with his signature Lowrey organ, which he was considered to be the Master of (unlike many other rock organists who preferred the Hammond organ sound, Hudson always used a Lowrey). He was once described by Keyboard magazine (Dec.1983) as "the most brilliant organist in the rock world". Outside of The Band, he was much in-demand as a session musician, and worked on movie soundtracks (Raging Bull, King of Comedy, The Right Stuff, etc.) and with artists such as Emmylou Harris, Van Morrison, Leonard Cohen, Roger Waters, and The Call, as well as on solo albums from his various bandmates. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Band in 1994. He released his only solo album, The Sea to the North in 2001, joined a re-formed Flying Burrito Brothers in 2002, and formed a band with his wife Maud, Best! in 2005. He continued doing session work throughout the 2000's and released an All-Star Canadian Tribute to The Band (with Neil Young, Bruce Cockburn, Cowboy,Junkies) in 2010 and Garth played on every track. Garth made his final public performance in Kingston, NY in 2023.  Garth's famous sound and style will be missed, but lives on in all the wonderful recordings of his and The Band's music.

Here's something I've been meaning to post for awhile now, just haven't gotten to it (sorry for the lack of posts recent weeks). It's Warren Haynes and Friends tribute to the Last Waltz, and their Last Waltz 40 Tour. This began as a one-time tribute show last year, and was so successful they announced a tour scheduled for select cities in January and February, 2017. Well those were also a success, so more recently they announced a second leg of the tour, which is currently playing now in selected US cities throughout April and May. And as part of this current leg of the the tour, original Band member Garth Hudson will be joining in for some of the shows. But this is from the first leg, in January (if any shows from the current leg with Garth become available, I'll try to post that as well). Of course, I've previously presented much from the Band (including the full Last Waltz show here), and another 40-year tribute show from last year (Midnight Ramble Band available here), so here now is Warren's assemblage of friends and musicians honoring the legacy of the Band and that iconic show from 1976 with a whole new interpretation with current talented musicians, but still featuring the classic style and sound of the original Band. With the 40th anniversary of The Band's historic final concert, The Last Waltz, coming up this week (Thanksgiving Day), many tributes to and celebrations of one of the greatest concerts in rock history will be held all around the US. Most of these tribute shows feature primarily local artists and celebrities, but some are all-star affairs. A couple of tribute show were already held earlier his year in New Orleans, featuring Warren Haynes, Don Was, and Michael McDonald, among others. This same group also plans to take this Last Waltz 40th show on tour in early 2017. A series of shows in New Zealand feature surviving Band member Garth Hudson, along with John Simon, and a host of NZ locals. Another all-star tribute show, and one also with direct ties to the actual 'Band' was held earlier this summer at Lincoln Center, New York, where Larry Campbell and the Midnight Ramble Band, which was Levon Helm's Band for many years prior to his death, hosted a gala tribute event. This show featured a couple of performers that were at the original Last Waltz, in Dr. John and Howard Johnson, as well as guests Bob Weir, Lucinda Williams, Patti Griffith, Buddy Miller, and newcomers Anderson East and Teddy Thompson (Richard Thompson's son). It was a scaled-down version of the epic-length original show, featuring most of the best songs, done in as authentic as possible versions (such as using Allen Toussaint's original horn arrangements, etc.). Overall, a wonderful show, and here it is for you. But of course, it is still no comparison to the original. Unfortunately, I only have this in the 224 kbps version posted here (obtained from BigO Worldwide). I'm sure there are higher quality versions floating around, but for now this is the best I have. While I'm going back and posting stuff from the 'classic' bands featured on this blog, here's another great show from The Band, that has relatively recently surfaced, and is not as readily available as other shows. The recording is pretty good, although not all that great (certainly no comparison to the great recordings from this time period in 'The Academy of Outtakes' boot previously featured here). But the show itself is great, and well worth hearing for Band fans.

In addition to all The Band posts, I also wanted to post some of Levon's solo shows, and particularly to feature Levon with his first solo project Band from the late '70's, the fine Levon Helm & the RCO All-Stars. I was all set to post an excellent show from New Year's Eve in NY 1977, but while visiting Levon's website, I saw that Levon himself has already released this same show (and a more complete version than I have) on CD from his personal archives. I hadn't realized that this show was released commercially. So, obviously, I won't be posting that show after all. If you want to hear that show, by all means order the CD, issued by Levon Helm Studios. Instead, then, I will post a rollicking celebration and review of Levon's illustrious career in music, from much later in his life (2010). This all-star music jam, featuring the most recent version of the Levon Helm Band, along with numerous guest stars and artists, is the final night celebration from the 6th Annual Mountain Jam Music Festival, in Hunter NY. And this night, since it was close to Levon's Birthday, was celebrated as Levon's 70th Birthday Jubilee (complete with elaborate cake, pictured below). So, what we get here is a nearly 3 hour extended show that provides a pretty good complete encapsulation of music from all phases of Levon's career celebrated with his band and musical friends (and shows that he still had it at 70). At the time, it was a great celebration of his life and career, and now, after his death, it takes on even more meaning in this regard. In a concert with many similarities to The Last Waltz itself, this show provides a gloriously fine tribute to the man and his music, as well as a bittersweet realization of the great loss his death (less than 2 years after this show) means to all of us.

Here's one more show from The Band that I wanted to post, this one coming from their final tour before The Last Waltz later that year. Now, there are certainly better sounding recordings from this tour out there, most notably the excellent FM broadcast recordings from Washington DC and New York (which are widely available at other sites, like TUBE and QualityBootz, and worth having if you don't already), but this one from the Greek Theatre in LA is one you probably don't have, and is not widely available elsewhere (so, it is just the thing to post here). This is a good (but not great) quality audience recording, with another great performance featuring a full set of 18 songs, including all the greats as well as a few songs not heard on any other shows featured here ('Forbidden Fruit', 'Twilight', 'Tears of Rage'), so this is well worth getting to round out your Band collection.

Here's more from The Band, and although this show is already fairly widely available (there are several different versions floating around), it is probably the best quality recording, as well as one of the best performances, from this middle period of The Band, and so I had to include it here for all to enjoy. Like the other Band shows I have posted, this is a real treat, a great show and performance, and a great recording, too. A must for fans of The Band.

Here's more from the Band, this time from their 1974 Before the Flood tour with Bob Dylan. This is an excellent soundboard recording. I had planned on posting the shows from both nights of their NY - MSG shows (1/30 &31), but when I listened to the recordings I had, it was clear that both were the exact same show (which I believe is from the 1/31 late show), so I guess I don't have the 1/30 show after all. Even though I had 2 shows from different sources claiming to be from that night, they both were identical to the 1/31/show. Since the setlist was pretty much the same every night for the Band's portion of the show, it sometimes is hard to determine which recordings go with which show, but it was clear that all the recordings I had were from the same show. Anyway, this is what I have for the MSG shows, and it is great stuff (just wish I had known earlier that I didn't really have both shows, or actually all three, since they played 2 shows on 1/31). Oh well, that is one of the frustrating things about bootleg recordings, you can never trust them to be what they claim to be. But enjoy this classic Band performance, whatever the actual date.

This is a very good audience recording of a show in Central Park in 1971 that features most of their classics as well as a few lesser known songs. I'll put up more from The Band in a few days.

Here it is, The Complete Last Waltz Bootleg, the raw, unmixed, unretouched soundboard tapes of the entire concert from that historic Thanksgiving Day (11/25/76) Show. This is the only recorded version that includes the entire concert from start to finish, and presents the show as a concert experience, rather than as an album experience. Yes, there is an official release that presents an expanded version of the concert (2002, Rhino, 4-CD Box Set), that includes several songs not originally included in the film or the original 3-LP or 2-CD releases, but it still leaves out several songs, and does not present all the songs in the actual concert order (The official expanded set fills up the 4th CD with rehearsal session takes and additional studio film music, rather than all songs from the concert). Also, the sound is vastly different on the bootleg from both the original and remastered expanded official releases. Don't get me wrong, the 4-disc Rhino release is exquisite and I heartily recommend it to all fans of the Band. Please, Go buy it. That project was meticulously remastered, crafted, and overseen by the perfectionist Robbie Robertson himself, and it sounds great!. But they also redubbed or overdubbed parts that were not clear, edited some of the songs, removed much of the crowd noise, etc. to create the best sound possible. What this bootleg version gives you is the actual concert experience, what it was like to have been there for the event itself, even with some sound limitations and mistakes (crowd noise, some instruments lost in the mix, or sloppy playing, etc. But it is still a fine sounding soundboard recording). I think both the expanded official release and this bootleg version are must-have for serious fans. Thus, this version is decidedly different from any official releases and does not infringe upon them. Just found this great boot of The Band of shows from December 1971 & a rehearsal session as well. Great Stuff. Reminded me of how much I like these guys. Note: Big thanks to Strawdog at Dinostunz for this one! Will post some more from The Band soon.

Plus a terrific 8-song rehearsal from UltraSonic Studios, Long Island, in Dec 1971, also uncirculating & in primo sound.
