Favorite Supertramp Songs
As a follow-up to my recent ranking of the studio albums from Supertramp, here is a list of my top 25 favorite Supertramp songs. They have so many wonderful songs, it's hard to trim that down to 25 favorites, and this list would probably change over time as different songs become more or less favored. And although I tried to include songs from throughout their catalog, this favorites list is obviously dominated by songs from my very favorite albums. They certainly have many songs from the rest of their albums that I still really like, but they generally just don't make the very top. I could easily list another 25 or so that are nearly as good as these, but these are my favorites overall (with album indicated in parentheses - see key below).
25. Tenth Avenue Breakdown (SM)
23. It's a Long Road (S)
24. You Win I Lose (STNC)
21. Brother Where You Bound? (BWB)
22. Sooner Or Later (STNC)
19. Take the Long Way Home (BA)
18. Hide in Your Shell (CC)
16. Goodbye Stranger (BA)
20. Dreamer (CC)
17. Oh Darling (BA)
15. Cannonball (BWB)
14. Ain't Nobody But Me(CWC)
13. Gone Hollywood (BA)
12. If Everyone Was Listening (CC)
11. Fool's Overture (EQM)
10. Lady (CWC)
9. Even in the Quietest Moments (EQM)
8. From Now On (EQM)
7. Sister Moonshine (CWC)
6. Asylum (CC)
5. Downstream (EQM)
4. Another Man's Woman (CWC)
3. School (CC)
2. Crime of the Century (CC)
1. Rudy (CC)
(S) - Supertramp (1970)
(CC) - Crime of the Century (1974)
(CWC) - Crisis? What Crisis? (1975)
(EQM) - Even in the Quietest Moments (1977)
(BA) - Breakfast in America (1979)
(BWB) - Brother Where You Bound? (1985)

Can't believe that "The Meaning" isn't on your favorite ST song list.
Hi Tjarley,
Thanks fpr your comment. I actually love The Meaning, great song! Only problem is, there are so many great songs on Crime, Crisis, and Moments that I couldn't get them all into the top 25. As for The Meaning, there are just 4 or 5 songs from Crisis that I like more that made it to the list. The Meaning would be in the top 30 though. What are your other favorites?
IMO, Gone Hollywood is far and away their best song -- it should be higher in your list! Glad that they finally played it live in 2010.
Hi Horst,
I think Gone Hollywood is great, and the very best song on Breakfast in America, but still doesn't quite match up with the best from Crime, Crisis, or Moments, IMHO. Thanks for your comment.
How tricky a personal a favourite list can be or is.... and I would say it depends on weather, morning, afternoon or evenings, night, sunshine or rain, your daily mood of the day, are you in love or not, etc.
Still for me, one song is above all the the rest from a musical perspective : Fool's Overture. You only write one song like this in your lifetime...
Greetings from Paris,
Derek

Same again - they're all there and again I'll disagree with the order.
Derek said it above - but which day of the week is it ?
What will be todays favourite ?
Is it Fool's Overture - is it School - is it Child Of Vision ?
They're all on my permanent playlist
Today - yes - it's a Babaji day !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Another very nice blog entry.
Many thanks.

To me their best overall song is Crime of the Century. One of the greatest if not the greatest album closers ever.the way that piano riff starts at the end of the vocal, then slowly the other instruments especially the sax enter until the song explodes in majestic euphoria,Album closers dont get better than this.
william,
I totally agree, and said something very similar in my review of the album. It certainly is the most powerful song on the album and one of the greatest closing tracks ever. And that is why it is my #2 song. But as great as that is, as a complete song, I still have a special love for Rudy, it's concept, story, multiple sections and levels that build throughout, fantastic music and arrangements, etc.), that it just edges out Crime as my favorite overall. The whole album is spectacular, and that closing is just absolutely stunning. Thanks for your comment.
