The Guess Who
August 31st, 1974
Canadian National Exhibition Place, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Soundboard recording, decent sound quality
Available in both lossless (FLAC) and mp3 (320 kbps) versions
Here's one more Guess Who show. This one comes from their 1974 Flavours tour and features a nice mix of songs from their then-recent albums (Flavours, Road Food) and their older classics. Although this show is sourced from a soundboard recording, it appears to come from an old low-quality cassette recording, as several limitations and artefacts from a deteriorating cassette tape are apparent in the sound quality, so it has decent, but not great sound. However, it's well-worth checking out, as it's a very good performance and contains a few different songs from other shows from this period (1974-75) previously featured. So, once again, since there are so few good quality live boots of classic Guess Who available out there, I feel compelled and obligated to pass along any and all decent Guess Who recordings so that they will be available to all. So, here again are The Guess Who in fine form in 1974.

More Guess Who! As most know, The Guess Who disbanded in late 1975, when lead singer/songwriter Burton Cummings folded the group to pursue his solo career. However, various forms of The Guess Who have continued on over the years. In 1977, the CBC tried to get the classic lineup of the group to re-unite for series of concerts, but neither Randy Bachman nor Burton Cummings were interested, as they had their own successful careers. However, original members Jim Kale (bass) and Garry Petersen (drums), along with former guitarists Kurt Winter and Don McDougall, were very interested, and with the blessing of Bachman and Cummings used the Guess Who name for their reunion. At this time Kale found that the name "The Guess Who" had never been officially registered, which he then did, and has had legal control of the band name ever since. This Kale-led version of the band put out new albums from 1978-1981 (Guess Who's Back, All This For a Song, and Now and Not Then), but were generally dismissed by critics and fans alike. But then in 1983, the original 'classic' lineup (Bachman, Cumminga, Kale, Petersen) did briefly re-unite for a limited series of concerts in Canada, which resulted in the release of a live album (Together Again) and video. This was the first time Bachman and Cummings had been together in the band since Bachman left in 1970. For these reunion concerts, the band sounded great and apparently had a great time, as several commented that they had never been better musically. That reunion was short-lived, however, as Bachman and Cummings went right back to their solo careers after the brief tour, and Jim Kale went back to fronting various different 'pseudo' versions of The Guess Who over the next several years. In 1997, Bachman and Cummings reunited with the band for a special one-time performance for a flood disaster relief benefit in their hometown of Winnipeg. Then, in 1999, the original quartet once again reunited, at the personal request from the Premier of Manitoba, at the closing ceremionies of the Pan American Games in Winnipeg. Following this the original band lineup remained together (with the addition of Don McDougall once again) for a full-scale tour through Canada in 2000 (resulting in another live album and video - Running Back through Canada), and continued to play live dates through 2003, including playing to the largest ticketed audience in Canadian history, an estimated 450,000, at the Toronto SARS benefit concert. By 2004, Cummings and Bachman had left again, but Kale and Petersen continued on with their version of the band, with various singers and lineups, right up to the present day. Over the last several years, Bachman and Cummings have joined together in their own band (Bachman-Cummings Band), which is basically their version of The Guess Who, but without the name (which Kale owns). By most accounts, the 1983 reunion was by far the most successful, productive, and musically close to the 'old' Guess Who of all the various reunion attempts. So, what we have here is a rehearsal session in preparation for the 1983 concerts, held in Vancouver a few days before their first show. The recording is very good quality, and the song versions presented are generally complete and pretty good, too, as they run through their concert preparations. There are some lags, gaps, discussion, and banter between songs (including a breakdown of what they will do in their next (last?) rehearsal at the end), but generally they just go right through the songs with no stops or problems. So, here is a unique look at the band in rehearsal for their big reunion show.

Link Restoration Update
Links Fixed! |
OK now, I think I have finally completed fixing/updating/re-doing virtually all of the download links lost in the hotfile shutdown. And, in some cases, also fixed some other problems or upgraded file quality where I could. So, hopefully everything is now back to running order. There are still several links to outside sources (other blogs, now defunct sites, etc.) that are not functioning, and I will keep working to fix those where possible. I also will continue to try to update/upgrade some of the older (192k) files to higher quality where possible. But other than those tweaks, things should be back to nearly full functioning once again. I almost hesitate to make such an announcement, because inevitably, that is when some problem or minor catastrophe strikes again. But hopefully, I can keep things up and running for awhile. If you do still find non-functioning links, let me know and I will try to fix them ASAP. Thanks for your continuing support and patience through this setback. New posts will be coming soon.

Genesis - 1982-09-29 - Reunion Rehearsal - London (Upgrade)
September 29, 1982
Hammersmith Odeon, London, UK
(Upgraded quality version - Repost)
Hammersmith Odeon, London, UK
(Upgraded quality version - Repost)
Rehearsal for Genesis Reunion Concert at Milton Keynes, Oct. 2, 1982
Soundboard recording, Good quality
New! Upgraded quality recordings. Now available in Lossless (FLAC) and higher quality Mp3 (320 kbps). Previously offered version was only 192 k.
While I am updating all the old, dead links, I've taken this opportunity to upgrade the quality of some of them most in need of it. So, here is a re-post of a unique Genesis performance that was first posted here way back in 2008. This, of course, is the soundboard recording from the only rehearsal session
prior to the one-off 1982 Genesis Reunion Concert at Milton Keynes, UK
on 10-02-1982. For those that don't know, this was an impromptu
'one-time-only' reunion show, in which Gabriel got together with his
former bandmates, presumably to help get Peter out of debt after getting
the WOMAD festival established earlier that year. The performance from
that memorable concert event is available on various bootlegs (as 'The
Lamb Woke Up Again', 'Six of the Best', 'Live from Milton Keynes'), of which the best available recorded version has also long been made available (in best quality) on this blog here previously. As others have commented previously, the
performance from that show is a bit shaky in spots (due to lack of
preparation time and rehearsal), but it remains the only time Gabriel
has re-joined the band onstage to date, certainly a one-of-a-kind event.
Unfortunately, all the known recordings from this show are fairly
mediocre audience recordings, certainly worth having, but not the best
quality. But here is a somewhat better quality recording of the rehearsal session (9-29-82) prior to the concert.
I commented previously regarding the uniqueness, worth, and quality of this session and recording, but suffice it to say that it certainly is a 'must-have' for fans of the band, and particularly for those that prefer the days when Gabriel was present.
And now, for the first time, I have obtained these files in higher quality versions than was available previously. Normally when I provide an upgrade such as this, I just update the original post and don't bother re-posting it as a 'new' entry. However, I thought the new availability of these upgraded versions deserved a post of their own to make everyone aware. So, if you had not obtained this show previously, by all means do so now, and even if you previously obtained this from here or elsewhere @ 192k, then it still is well-worth it to download these upgraded quality files for this unique rehearsal event in Genesis history.
For more details and info regarding the session and performance, see original post info here

Westwood One In Concert Radio Show (88-03)

available in both lossless (FLAC) and mp3 (320 kbps) versions
Here's another fine radio show (from draftervoi again) featuring MidWestern 'roots-rockers' the BoDeans in a performance from their home town of Waukesha, WI. This one is from back in 1988 and features songs from their first 2 albums (Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams -1986, Outside Looking In - 1987), a glimpse of their next album, Home-1989 ('Sylvia', 'Good Work'), as well as a previously unreleased rocker ('You Ain't Around') and a couple of tasty covers (including the Stones' 'Shattered', which includes the phrase that became the BoDeans 1st album title 'Love&Hope&Sex&Dreams'). Check it out.

January 24, 1989
The Warfield, San Francisco, CA
KFOG-FM broadcast recording (from a high bias master cassette), very good quality
available in both lossless (FLAC) and mp3 (320 kbps) versions
Here's another great radio show from John Hiatt, this one from early on in the Slow Turning Tour. This is one of my favorite periods for John's shows, with The Goners, as he plays a few songs from Bring The Family, then plays most of his 'new' album, Slow Turning, which for my money was his very best. Great sound and great performances here (John opened for Robert Cray again on this tour, as he also did in 1987 as in this show). This is another show that has come courtesy of draftervoi (Thanks David!), who specializes in collecting quality radio shows.

Holiday Break?
Ok, so I have taken a bit more of a break from posting shows here than I intended over the 'holidays', and there are many factors that have contributed to making things a bit more complicated, but I am now ready to get back to business here, at least in my usual somewhat sporadic way. First off, the weather lately has been very difficult to deal with, starting with snow, frigid temperatures, and including an epic ice storm here a few days before Christmas, which resulted in my home losing all power (and heat) for 4 straight days right through Christmas, which was then compounded with more snow, freezing rain, and ice (I'm still trying to clear the ice out from around the house). So, that has been a real adventure. Now, I'm not complaining, we still had a fine Christmas and holidays regardless (just like those Whos in Whoville), and are thankful that we escaped with no real problems or lasting damage, it was just a bit of an adventure, and has taken alot of time to deal with. But, for the blog, I have been trying to steadily update and re-post stuff for all the dead hotfile links throughout this time, so I have been doing some blog-related stuff. Up to now I have re-upped the links for all the posts from 2010 through 2013, as well as many other individual shows and artists (all Kinks, Dan, etc., now working on getting all the NY posts updated). So, things are mostly back up, and should be all fixed very soon (until the next filesharing fiasco). Anyway, I'm back now, and will start things up again by sharing a couple more radio shows (John Hiatt and Bodeans) that I got from draftervoi. So, once again, thanks all for the support I receive, and enjoy!
