After featuring mainly older classic music from the 70's and 80's for past several months, how about something much more current, for a change? Well, the folk-rock/indie-rock band Dawes released a new album a few weeks ago, Misadventures of Doomscroller, and it is absolutely sensational,  certainly one of the best albums of 2022 so far, and probably the band's best as well. When Dawes got started back in 2009, they were dubbed folk rock or roots rock, as they had a somewhat folky, country, vintage '70's Laurel Canyon sound (think Eagles, CSN, Neil Young, Tom Petty, Jackson Browne, etc.), but they actually are much more versatile than that, and since their early albums, they have branched out into many different styles, losing a lot of the 'folksy or country aspects, moving into more indie rock, power pop, and other styles, but still at the center is Taylor Goldsmith's songwriting featuring thoughtful, clever, intelligent lyrics and beautiful melodies, ranging from personal, introspective ballads (ala Jackson Browne) to funky pop-rock featuring sardonic observations on the human experience to anthemic sing-alongs. But on their latest album, their 8th, they add in a bit more jazz and even some progressive rock and stretch out musically with longer songs featuring more instrumental breaks and improvisation, for a delightful and refreshing mix of music that pushes the band in new directions while still retaining familiar aspects that we love about the band. By all means, check out Misadventures of Doomscroller, a great album. Here today, I have a short show from the band from earlier this year, prior to the new album's release, but which still features a couple tracks from the new album ('Someone Else's Cafe' and 'It Comes in Waves') as well as various older songs. Because it is a short show (about 1 hr), I have also added several tracks from another show from last year to round out the set. Between the two shows the combined set features at least one track from all 8 of their albums, so there is a nice mix of newer and older songs. Both of these shows were recorded by Larry Rulz and full video of the shows have been made available on YouTube, so check out the videos there if interested. These audio tracks were taken directly from the Youtube videos, so no lossless versions are available. So, be sure to check out this 2022 version of Dawes
