Last week, legendary Prog/pop/rock band Genesis (or at least what remains of Genesis) wrapped up their Last Domino? Tour at the O2 Arena in London on March 26, 2022, with what has been called the last ever concert performance by Genesis. Whether or not this truly is the final concert of some form of Genesis remains to be seen, but considering the declining health of lead singer Phil Collins (who already can no longer play the drums), it may very well be the end. And what a sad and bittersweet end that it is. Genesis, of course, was one of the all-time great progressive rock bands of the 1970's, but after departures of vocalist Peter Gabriel and guitarist Steve Hackett and facing changes in the commercial music landscape in the 1980's, the band morphed into a very successful pop/rock band through the 1990's. A reunion tour in 2007 brought the remaining core players, Phil Collins, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford back for another brief go-round, and then declining health of Collins precluded any further band activities. That  is, up until this Last Domino? Tour was announced , originally scheduled for 2020, but postponed until late 2021 and early 2022 due to the pandemic. Thus giving fans of the band one last opportunity to see them in concert, and I'm sure those that did see them on this tour were happy to be able to do so. But this current version of the band is still a pale imitation of the former greatness of this legendary band. Although Collins makes a bold attempt, confined to sit throughout the show, his voice is noticeably weak and frail. And the setlist, unfortunately, focuses primarily on the hits, with the bulk of the songs coming from their post-1980 output, and even the 'classic' era 1970's songs that are included are mostly inserted as snippets or incomplete forms wedged into longer medleys. But here it is, for history's sake, if nothing else, the final live concert from Genesis. It is perhaps fitting (or ironic) that Peter Gabriel was actually there for this show, but sitting in the audience, rather than as a part of the band, as it appears that there is no longer a place for him in this band, or that he would have much interest in joining in. But Collins, Banks, and Rutherford are all great musicians that have made much great music over the years, and this is a fine show for what it is, but yes, it is a somewaht sad end to a great band.
