Elvis Costello & The Attractions
1994-06-19
Chastain Park, Atlanta, GA
Audience recording, very good quality
Available in both lossless (FLAC) and mp3 (320 kbps) versions
After the Mighty Like a Rose Tour, in late 1991, Elvis acted upon his increasing interest in classical music, meeting with one of his favorite classical groups, The Brodsky Quartet. Upon learming that they were also fans of his, they began plans to collaborate on a new musical project, which became The Juliet Letters, a song cycle about love, life, death, and correspondance, featuring vocals by Elvis accompanied by The Brodsky Quartet, and the songs and music written by Elvis and various collaborations with the 'The Brodskies', which was released in early 1993. Although the album was critically-acclaimed and well-received by the record-buying public, in general Elvis's more rock-oriented fans had little interest or use for this musical diversion. In 1993, Elvis toured exclusively with the Brodsky Quartet, but there are very few recordings available from these shows (as there seemed to be little interest from tapers as well). However, Elvis returned to rock, and even reunited with The Attractions (for the first time in 7 years), for his next album, which marked the triumphant return of Elvis Costello & The Attractions, and featured their best album in quite some time, with Brutal Youth (1994). The strong new album and subsequent tour seemed to be a re-birth for Elvis and the band, but underneath the surface there were still the same hostilities and discontent among the band, so the successful reunion was destined to be short-lived. The Brutal Youth tour, however, was a great one, and to the audiences there were no indications of problems, just great shows and music. There are many excellent recordings available from this tour, including several soundboards, but I am posting here a great lesser-known show, from Atlanta, primarily because it was the day after the show I was at (don't have a recording from my show, and this one has very good sound and a similar setlist). So, here, enjoy Elvis, back with the Attractions in 1994 for a great, but limited run.

Elvis Costello & The Rude 5
1991-05-29
Wiltern Theatre, Los Angeles, CA
Audience recording, good quality
Available in both Lossless (FLAC) and mp3 (320 kbps) versions
In honor of his current Northeast US Solo Tour (which I have the great fortune to attend this week), I will be featuring Elvis Costello for the rest of this month and next. But we'll start back with where I left off last time (after featuring his '80's tours), and feature some of his '90's tours. First up, the Mighty Like A Rose tour, 1991. After extensive touring in 1989, both solo and with the Rude 5, Elvis took most of 1990 off, but returned in late 1990 to record Mighty Like A Rose with varying assemblages of musicians and producers from song to song, as well as another whole album of cover tunes (Kojak Variety), which would not be released until 1995. After release of Mighty Like a Rose in May 1991, Elvis began a major world tour with 'The Rude 5' hitting the US, Europe, Japan, and Australia throughout most of the rest of the year. Although this was not one of my favorite Elvis albums or periods, like all of his tours, it featured some very interesting and unique versions of some of his songs, and is worth checking out. This show is from very early in the tour (4th show), which began in California, and although this recording is not all that great, it is not bad for an audience recording.

John Hiatt - 1987-09-18 - The Warfield, San Francisco, CA
John Hiatt
& The Goners
September 18, 1987
The Warfield, San Francisco, CA
FM Broadcast (KFOG-FM) recording, excellent quality
Available in both Lossless (FLAC) and mp3 (320 kbps) versions
Here's some more from the great John Hiatt, this one a short but wonderful opening set from 1987 (he opened for the Robert Cray Band), and this excellent-sounding FM broadcast recording comes courtesy of one of our blog readers (draftervoi, who specializes in FM broadcast recordings), so much thanks to him for making this available. This show comes shortly after the release of Bring the Family, which became his 'breakthrough' album, after years of struggling to find an audience. Thus this set features several songs from that wonderful album, as well as featuring John with one of his best back-up bands, The Goners. This set also features a rare early song that John never had recorded ('A Crazy Girl is Hard to Find') and a preview of a song from his next album, Slow Turning ('Tennessee Plates'). Overall, a great opening set (although too short!).

Barenaked Ladies - Outtakes & Bonus Tracks (1996-2013) (Updated)
Barenaked Ladies
Outtakes & bonus tracks (1996-2013)
Studio outtakes & bonus tracks, excellent quality
mp3 @ 320k
Re-up of previously available compilation, plus now upgraded to include 3 bonus tracks from Grinning Streak (2013).
Recently I was reminded by a reader that my 2010 post containing these outtakes from the Barenaked Ladies had never been re-upped after the 'great megaupload fiasco of 2012' (at least that what I'm calling it). And I was surprised to find that he was quite right: the old useless megaupload link was still there on my web blog page. Although I had thought I had fixed all of those long ago and updated with new links, here was one I had missed after all this time. As I looked into it some more, I then realized that initially when I was re-uploading and updating all these links, I had misplaced these particular files, they were not backed-up to where they were supposed to be in my mess of a 'system' of music file organization. So, at the time I skipped over them, until I could find them again. Well then, of course, after awhile I forgot all about them and just never got tracked them down and got this updated. So now, spurred back into action, I located the missing files (oh yeah, so That's where they were!), and decided that now, since BNL have recently put out a new album, and there were also additional bonus tracks associated with that one, that I certainly should add in the new tracks as well. So, here you have it, the original outtake collection, with the addition of the new bonus tracks from Grinning Streak also included. So, if you hadn't downloaded this previously, now there is even more reason to do it now, and if you had been waiting for me to finally get this back up, sorry, but now the wait is over. Enjoy! I do believe this was the last of the old dead links still hanging around, but if you happen to find any others, let me know.

John Hiatt - 1993-10-30 - London (Pre-FM)
John Hiatt
(& The Guilty Dogs)
1993-10-30
The Forum, London, UK
Pre-FM Broadcast recording, excellent quality
mp3 @ 320 kbps

How about some John Hiatt? Here is a great-sounding full-length concert radio broadcast from early in John's tour for his 1993 album, Perfectly Good Guitar. This is a tour that I haven't featured anything from previously, so this is a great addition to the shows already presented. In 1993, following John's less than successful stint with the intriguing star-filled but commercially failed venture known as Little Village, and inspired by the some of the young alternative bands his son was listening to at the time, John decided to move forward in a more hard-edged straight-on rock approach for his next album. So, John got with producer Matt Wallace (Faith No More, The Replacements) and assembled a band of young alt-rockers, including members of School of Fish and Wire Train, and in two weeks put together an album of decidedly harder-edged rock songs than any of his previous albums. For some (those with a bent towards harder rock), this was a welcome relief and praised this as some of his best work, while those that preferred his more folksy-countryish rock style were less impressed. For me, it was a mixed effort, as there are some very good songs here, but overall, I much preferred his previous albums and the more folksy style, and thought that the harder rock style did not mesh very well with his songs and songwriting style. True to the album and his mind-set at the time, the live shows for this tour featured a young, lean, muscular band that offered more rocking and aggressive versions of all of John's songs. So, if you prefer harder driving live shows, this is the John Hiatt tour for you. For me, Slow Turning was his very best album, and his tours with The Goners as back-up the best band and arrangements, but many others prefer these rockier versions and The Guilty Dogs. So check out John and his band for this harder-edged sound and style, and this excellent recording, and decide for yourself which songs and style you prefer. But it's all good with John Hiatt, anytime, all the time, right?
