Here's something a bit different for this blog, a collection of live recordings from Captain Beyond, a renowned, short-lived, and underappreciated '70's progressive/heavy rock band. I dug this out from old files for a request from another forum, and figured I should post it here as well, for anyone interested. Captain Beyond was formed in 1971 from the remains of other notable heavy rock bands of the time, with Rod Evans (from Deep Purple) on vocals, Larry "Rhino" Rheinhart and Lee Dornan (from Iron Butterfly) on guitar and bass, and Bobby Caldwell (from Johnny Winters) on Drums. They played a unique blend of progressive-psychedelic-heavy metal-space-rock, as featured on their first album (Captain Beyond-1972). Although now considered a classic, poor promotion (from southern-rock oriented Capricorn records) resulted in dismal sales and little recognition. Drummer Bobby Caldwell had already left before their second album, the slightly more commercial, yet still wonderful, Sufficiently Breathless-1973). However, vocalist Rod Evans left shortly after, essentially ending the band. But they re-formed in 1976 (without Evans, but with Caldwell back, for one more album in 1977). Here is a 'bootleg anthology' consisting of multiple dates from 1971 (their debut concert at Montreaux) to the reformed band in 1977. Since there are few surviving live recordings of this band, this is a rare treat from a unique time in progressive rock.

Here's some more from Dan Hicks, this time many years after his Hot Licks hey-day, when he re-emerged on the music scene with his new band, the Acoustic Warriors. Dan played and recorded (live album, Shootin' Straight - 1994) with this band for several years (although the back-up players changed periodically). However, by 2000 he went back to using the Hot Licks moniker for his band, and released a new studio album (Beatin' the Heat) complete with guest stars (and Dan Hicks fans) such as Brian Setzer, Elvis Costello, and Tom Waits, which served to revitalize his career, leading to several more albums over the next several years, culminating with the 2010 release Crazy for Christmas.   But here, you can catch Dan with his '80's band incarnation the acoustic warriors and Dan's unique version of Folk Jazz Swing.

Another week into 2016, and, unfortunately, the death of another memorable musician from the 60's and 70's. Dan Hicks grew up in the San Francisco Bay area, started out as a drummer in school bands, and eventually joined up with the psychedelic jam band, The Charlatans, in 1965, part of the burgeoning 60's Bay area music scene. He also had picked up the guitar and songwriting along the way, and started an acoustic band, singing, playing guitar, and writing most of the music, for what he dubbed, Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks,in 1967, which mainly served as an opening act for the Charlatans. Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks played a unique blend of folk, country, jazz, humor, and swing, and pretty soon, as they became more popular (and interesting) than his regular band, they became his primary endeavor; And securing a record deal and critically acclaimed album (Original Recordings) in 1969, they were on their way. But the original band fell apart by 1971, so Dan formed a new version of The Hot Licks, which is now considered the 'classic lineup', releasing multiple albums from 1971 to 1973, and slowly building up some success and acclaim, highlighted by Last Train to Hicksville in 1973. However, just as the band was becoming recognized and successful, Dan pulled the plug and stepped back from the music industry for the next several years. Then, in the late '80's, Dan put together another unique band, known as Dan Hicks and The Acoustic Warriors, with a similar style as the Hot Licks, but with more of a jazz background, for what he referred to as Folk Jazz Swing. The Acoustic Warriors continued through the Nineties, but then came back again with a successful revival of The Hot Licks (both in name and style) starting around 2000, which lead to a revitalization of Dan and his remarkable music. The songs and style of Dan Hicks and his various band incarnations are unique and timeless, and are just a joy behold. We will miss Dan and his unique sound and style, but there are plenty of delightful recordings to keep his memory alive. Surprisingly, though, considering how he was known for his live shows, there are very few Dan Hicks shows available around the internet. Here is a fine one, from early in the career of the Hot Licks, around the time of the release of their 2nd album (Where's the Money?-1971), and the first group of shows with the new, revived lineup. By request, here's one I pulled from my archives and didn't really quite know what I had. But after pulling this out, I found it to be a gem of a show. Here's Cooder and Lindley (and a couple of their kids, too, which is why it was called The Family Tour) doing what they do best in a great show and an excellent, clear recording (Unfortunately, I only have this in a lower bitrate mp3), that sounds wonderful. So, thanks to Ryan for getting me to dig this one out and listen to it, and so here it is for all to enjoy. Cooder and Lindley shine and play in ways (virtuosity, interesting and unique styles and arrangements) quite unlike anyone else.

It's been a mournful first month of 2016 for rock music fans, with the deaths of several notable veteran rock artists, including Lemmy (Motorhead), Dale Griffin (Mott The Hoople), and most recently, Paul Kantner (Jefferson Airplane/ Starship) and Maurice White (Earth, Wind, & Fire). But the most sudden, shocking, and devastating of all was the totally unexpected and near back-to back deaths of legendary rock icons David Bowie and Glenn Frey. Bowie was a true original, a pioneering and innovative artist, constantly re-inventing himself and challenging both himself and audiences with new directions, styles, and sounds over the years. Personally, I was not always a fan of the musical directions he chose (mainly a fan of his '70's output), but I always had the utmost respect for him as an artist. Many others have put up glowing tributes to Bowie (and have re-upped many fine concerts and recordings), and can do a much better job of it than me, so I won't attempt it here, but he will be missed in the world of rock.

Glenn Frey is another icon, a major player and very talented musician in the rock world, but in a different way than Bowie. Frey was obviously a much more mainstream musician, but as the driving force behind the Eagles, the most popular and successful band of the last 45 years, he also created something totally unique. In the early '70's, they took country-rock, a genre and style struggling to find an audience, and with superior songwriting, rich harmonies, and an easy-going charm and style, brought their music into the mainstream with numerous rock and pop masterpieces. For many of us, the Eagles provided major components for the soundtrack of our lives in the '70's and '80's. They have two of the best-selling albums of all-time (Greatest Hits 1971-1975 and Hotel California), but for me, their masterpiece is still Desperado (which actually was their poorest-selling album), which I think is one of the very best rock albums ever made (definitely top-10). Although they have certainly received a good bit of backlash for their phenomenal success, their songs remain much-loved classics. And although they have released very little new material (just 2 new albums over the last 20 years), they have remained major concert draws year after year. They recently concluded their highly successful epic 2-year History of the Eagles Tour, which saw a return to the 3-hour shows of yesteryear, and followed a chronological history of the band's music, even including the return of former bandmate, original guitarist Bernie Leadon, and a very fine show it was. Thus, it was a nice way to go out, even though fans at the time did not know it would be the last chance to see Glenn and the Eagles performing together, it nonetheless provided a fine ending for the band. So, here is a show from the final leg of the HOTE Tour, among the very last shows for Glenn and the band. Although it is sad that Glenn is now gone, his music lives on for us all to enjoy.

Here's a 2015 show from the folk-rock, roots-rock band, Dawes. Dawes consists of primary songwriter-vocalist-guitarist, Taylor Goldsmith, his brother Griffin Goldsmith (drums, vocals), Duane Betts (guitar), and Wylie Gelber (bass), and come from the Laurel Canyon area near Los Angeles, California. They feature a pleasant 'vintage' rock sound and style, intelligent songwriting, and are just plain good. You can hear elements in their music similar to such classic bands as CSN, Neil Young, Tom Petty, and Jackson Browne, but they have their own style, too. Their debut album, North Hills, came out in 2009, with subsequent albums, Nothing is Wrong (2011), Stories Don't End (2013), and their latest, All Your Favorite Bands (2015).  This is their show from Bonnaroo last year featuring several songs from their newest album as well as some favorites from earlier albums.  Check 'em out.
